Help !! New doula here....Just had a client call, said, " She has rash on her stomach, Doc's office/nurse said she had 'P.U.P.S.' a common rash during preg." ????? Told her to use cortisone cream for itch, nurse could not remember what 'P.U.P.S.' stood for, nor could she tell her what caused it, or if it would it go away. Does anyone know what this is, or a web site I can refer her to for natural relief? And if there is a natural relief for a rash, such as let's say an oatmeal bath or something like that, is it out of our scope to tell her that it is a possible relief or should I just refer her to a web site?? Client would really like to know what pups is, and what causes it.
I began a thread months ago about PUPPPS (it is 3 ps) (Pruritic Urticarial Papules and Plaques of Pregnancy).
You could direct her to a homeopath as that is how my client found relief. There are not many remedies (dandelion, ect) that either of my 2 clients found relief with. You can PM if there is anything I can do. You can also search for my thread although I think I only put 2 ps in the post.

On a personal note, I had PUPPPS with my last pregnancy and my mw recommended dandelion root tincture, a few squirts in a glass of water. It did the trick for me with no recurrence in a matter of days.
I wouldn't feel it within my scope of practice to recommend it, but you can certainly gather some info for her and let her decide.

It is out of our scope as Doulas, yes! If you are a homeopath, then you need to take the Doula hat off and prescribe. Although it is not beyond our scope to refer or direct clients to answers. They need to complete the follow through. My January client also bought a soap and cream online that she loves I will have to get back to you on that one.
The remedy that my client used was Dolichos Pruriens. But this is for your information not to tell your client where to get it. You could help her seek out a homeopath, believe me it is always good to have that resource in your back pocket, especially a good one (pregnany and birth knowledgeble).

I had this with my first pregnancy and am crossing my fingers I won't with this one! There were very few things that offered relief. It covered me from the "waist" down and started to show up on my arms but I refused to scratch it there and stopped it from spreading.I tried ointments and oatmeal bath and of course staying home and wearing very little clothes, because anything touching it would irritate it. The thing that worked the best, for me, was when I was sleeping and would wake up scratching til I almost bled I'd go get an ice pack, wrap it in a hand towel (fairly thick) and put it where I was scratching so I could go back to sleep. It worked really well. Homeopath-type stuff was never mentioned to me, so I never tried that kind of stuff. Its the absolute worst I will say that! OH! And my OB didn't know the name of it but said the only cure was delivering, which drove her to strip my membranes, a week before my due date, without telling me until she was doing it.
Just out of curiosity, is she having a boy? I have read that over 70% of women that have this have boys, and that male fetal DNA can be found when a skin biopsy is done. Some think that male fetal DNA in these cases is an irritant. Weird. I get all itchy thinking about it.

Yes I read the boy thing and also that its common in bigger babies and multiples. Mine was a girl, 8 lbs 8 oz. Figures I'm in the 30%.
I had a rash during pregnancy, but never diagnosed what it was exactly. From what my midwife said and from what I'm researched, liver problems can cause those skin problems.
My midwife suggested Nettle and something else that I can't think of.... maybe milk thistle. It cleared it up mostly by my last couple of weeks...

Very interesting! When I had it, I gave birth to a boy.
