Excerpt from this article:Just as important as what a doula is is what she's not. Doulas don't replace the doctors or midwives who actually deliver the baby, nor do they take over for nurses. They're not deciding what should be done medically. They're not telling women not to have babies in hospitals. They aren't trying to replace family members in the delivery room.

They're doing everything they can to make the birth less painful and help the woman in labor communicate clearly with the medical personnel.

"It's not a new thing, but it really is a new thing," said Leigh Dalzell, the doula who helped with Leeman's labor and is working for Healthy Start.
