Welcome aboard :) The doula or CBE course?

I'm starting with the labor doula course, and I'm hoping to move on to the CBE course in a year or two.

Congrats! I'm also in the Doula and CBE course.
I love it so far, although I feel like I'm behind because morning sickness has been kicking my butt for the last month!

How do you go about doing both the cbe and doula programs? I just joined for the cbe program but feel a little overwhelmed thinking about doing the doula program too.

Patrice, it's actually not been that hard (well, other than the morning sickness that has kept me from doing anything! This is the first week I can read without having to puke!), a lot of the information goes hand-in-hand, and some of the assignments are even the same, so it makes it a nice course to take together. I'm loving both of them!

Thanks, I am now officially doing both programs as well. I'm really excited. In the meantime, I'm thinking doula first but am reading a book that's common to both programs. I'm happy to be starting this journey.

Hey! Do you ladies buy all your books and borrow what you can from libraries? Is there a lending library out there some where?

I just bought the 5 books that I either don't already own or aren't at my neighboring libraries. They are actually ones that I'd likely buy anyway.
What do others do?

I would try Ebay, Amazon (they have used books, but you have to watch out because the shipping can be expensive), thrift stores. Some libraries have an inter-library lending
system if you want to just read the book and not own it.
You could also try the marketplace here on alldoulas. You could ask specifically for the books you need.
I am a big advocate of students buying used books....

Hey Patrice-

I've been borrowing books from the library, since we have a great inter-library loan system (6 counties!). All the required books for the doula course are on my library system except for one. That way I can try-before-I-buy. I would also recommend half.com and Amazon Marketplace for cheap books. That's how I purchased all my textbooks when I was in college.

Yeah, I ended up going to amazon for just about all 5 of the doula training books that my library doesn't carry. Some of them were cheaper buying used so when that was the case I went that route. I'm an amazon prime member (free 2 day shipping) so if it made more sense, that what I did.

A few of the books are cheaper for me at Borders. The cost is about the same as amazon but I don't have to pay shipping even if they have to order them plus I always get between 20 and 30% discounts on my books there.

I received my cd's for the cbe program yesterday and started to listen to one a bit but I'm guessing that I'll be getting a manual soon (as well as my doula program materials) and I'll likely need to do it all together. Is that right?

I got my cbe manual today! I'm confused with one part, lol. I've signed up for the yahoo group and am awaiting approval so I'll ask questions there I suppose or I'll pm someone here doing the cbe program.

I am preparing for a show I'm doing this weekend and my baby girl's first birthday, so I think I'll wait till I'm done with that and focus on my training after Monday. Or maybe I'll wait till my doula materials arrive and look at it all together.

I have the program for CBE but have yet to start it. I am having a problem getting motivated right now.

I'd love to be study partners with someone to help us both stay motivated and to "chat" about what we are learning/reading. Anybody wanna "study" with me???

WeLCOME ABOARD!

I buy my books, used.... I buy them because I offer a lending library as part of my services! :)

Jessica, I'll study with you! Where are you in the curriculum?!?! This will be great! I'll PM you!

I'll study with you ladies! I'm reading the books with the doula program right now.

I'd love to be a study buddy too! Right now I'm reading the books on the list (I went a little overboard with requesting books at the library ...:rofl), and working through the curriculum. I'm on the childbirth activities, and I got distracted from my daily walks when my husband got a nasty stomach bug which had us pretty confined to the house.

Also, are there any BAI people who are paying All Doulas members, so maybe we could start a club?

i'm waiting for a check to clear so that i can be a paying member. i'll check the bank! we can start a club... i thought about this yesterday! :)

I buy the majority of my books used at half-price bookstores and thrift stores. I like to use www.campusi.com (http://www.campusi.com) to find the best deals on book prices, which would include amazon and ebay.

I occasionally also get books through www.paperbackswap.com (http://www.paperbackswap.com), where you swap books and only pay shipping when you send books out. It's great for me because I go through so many books. You can add a wishlist and when someone posts a book that is on your list, you'll get notified. This site is hit or miss because there are not a lot of them out there. It's good if you have a list of books that you want and are not itching to get them right away.

I do paperbackswap and amazon. If I get get books from borders I do that too as I always have coupons for 20-30% off.
I'm a member too so I can join if we do a group on here.

I find some of the cheapest books (book and shipping) at Abebooks.com I got two books on twins for about $4 each, not bad when you consider that shipping is usually about $3-4.

I'm going to order the BAI birth doula and Aromatherapy courses (waiting for a check to come in first). I'd met my DONA requirements, but decided I don't want to keep paying them money and recertifying all the time, so decided not to send in my cert stuff and go with BAI instead.

I'm thinking about the BAI CBE program, but can't find whether they list the completion requirements on the website. Can someone give me an idea of what they are? Also, do you need to write book reports as well?
Thanks!

I've also just ordered my materials from BAI and am waiting. I've been waiting about two weeks and really hope they get here soon! Also, I have my first official client due in March. Pretty exciting that this is all finally happening.

So when you ordered the doula program from BAI, what exactly did you receive in the mail? Will I need to own a printer to complete any of the work?

I will have had my materials for 2 yars in May. I am so ashamed. Life just got in the way. I have done more births and continued to read books I just have been out of the loop in the yahoo group and haven't done and reading or activities out of the course book.
My life is getting much more organized and much more enjoyable. I was very unhappy for a while so I decided that it was time to put my 2.5 YO DD in daycare and go back to work. I am so much happier now. I will be moving to a new house in a few weeks and after we get settled I plan to get down and dirty with my doula work :D I also have decided that in the furture I WILL be a midwife :D
I can be buddies but I don't have a membership so I can't be on the club side, sorry gals.

Update - I have since received my book and have started working on the assignments. I thought I knew a lot about birth already but this BAI book offers so much insight that I had never considered before. The assignments seem very comprehensive and will be a great tool for learning more about myself in the process. It's great!

How long do you have from the time you register....?

I'm doing BAI CBE now... but am doing so really slowly and really piecemeal... just picked it up again after months going by.

I am finding I have alot more to say than I thought I would, in the assignments.

There is definitely alot more to it.

(I'll be seeing Demetria in March at a conference- the second time I'll have met up with her in person. I've grown to like her, and am looking forward to seeing her.)

Is it the Midwifery Today Conference???

So how long do you have to finish everything? It sounds relaxed from your 'tone.'
1 year, 2 years, 3 years....?

I hope to take the BAI Doula training course in October in Eugene, Or. I'm excited! I am hoping to get to the Midwifery Today conference there in March, but I have a client due a couple days before it starts, so the likelyhood of that happening is not high!

Oh I'm so glad to see so many people doing the BAI CBE training...I've been looking at a few different programs lately and leaning toward BAI and I think I'm finally ready to jump in. Thanks for sharing! I'd love to see how it goes for everyone!
