I think they should send out a pack of their certified doulas to help the pregnant evacuees of hurricane Katrina. What do you think the chances of that are? But this is also something that should have been done LONG ago, perhaps when they first sent them to Houston. :shrug

Just thinking out loud! :waitasec

I agree, but unfortunately for so many it is hard to pack up and leave family. I thought a lot about it and still feel guilty for not being able to go, but I have seven children and a daycare with six kids who all count on me to be here daily. My family wouldn't be able to function without me for one week if dh was working (he works third shift) and my daycare families - even though I love them are the most selfish people I have ever met!!! They would never understand me leaving, and sadly I couldn't lose my income either - maybe one week, but not two.

There is a couple of discussion about it on the dona discussion forums. Here is one.

Also there is the Doula Crisis Fund which will cover the expenses of doulas assisting women affected by the hurricane. I have a friend who is a midwife who is/has gone down to help too.

Right Michelle.. I mean just those who want to volunteer of course, but I was saying DONA should fund it because some people have the ability to leave, just not the funds to do it.

Georganne, I don't have access to that forum so I can't view the discussions but I'm glad to hear there is talk of it. ;)

Oops sorry. I didn't realize it was in the members section. But yes, there is discussion on it and I'm sure there area few doulas who have already or are planning on going on their own.

CAPPA's Operation Special Delivery is also working to include Katrina Evacuees to their list of clients who can qualify for free volunteers.

As Georganne mentioned, DONA's Doula Care Crisis Fund is now available for moms that were effected by Katrina.
