Jennifer Richardson lay in the maternity room bed at Mary Washington Hospital. She moaned in agony as a sharp contraction pulsed through her abdomen.
"I don't know if I can take anymore," she told Hassie Whitaker, who stood at the head of her bed, stroking her arm.
...Whitaker placed a cold cloth behind Jennifer's neck and placed her hands at Jennifer's lower back to prepare for the next stab of pressure that was sure to come.
"You can do this," she quietly reassured Jennifer. "You're almost there. Look how far you've come. It won't be long now."
