Education without certification

So exactly who has 'trained' through DONA or CAPPA; purchased a certification packet, read the reading list, possibly attended a workshop, etc...but decided to not pursue certification ? In such a case, can you call yourself a 'DONA/CAPPA trained Labor Doula' as long as you left out 'licensed' or 'certified'?

Me too! I advertise myself as a:

DONA-trained birth doula
CAPPA-trained postpartum doula

One of the things that made me realize cert wasn't necessary is that a woman can attend 100 births and not be certified or can attend only 3 and be...and the fact that she has LD or CD(DONA) behind her name doesn't exactly tell who's most qualified/has more experience, etc. KWIM?

I advertise as a DONA trained birth doula, (soon to be CAPPA trained too), but I also let people know that I am working towards certification. It's important for me to be certified, but I can certainly understand why people wouldn't, and I don't think it makes much difference, either.

I have explored the standards of practice for both of my doula certifying organizations and can't find anywhere that it says "no aromatherapy". I know that we can't "prescribe" anything which includes EO's. Hospitals don't allow the use of aromatherapy through candles due to the fire risk. But I use aromatherapy that the mom has provided or selected. We then put some on a cotton ball and place it near her in the room. I also use lavender in my rice socks as aromatherapy if the mom likes lavender. I always check with the nurse on duty for any of her allergies as well. Many women have allergies and it is my understanding that it is best to have moms provide or select their aromatherapy of choice.
