Talking Time between workshop and certification?

I was wondering what a reasonable time line is between taking the workshop and achieving certification?
Six months? A year? Longer?
Thank You

I think it would depend on which agency you choose to certify with, what their requirements are, and how fast you can connect with moms and attend the needed births.

I took the DONA training in late September, and have been to two of my three certification births already, with the third mom due Dec. 5. I hope to have my certification packet in by Jan. 1. I was chatting with a DONA rep by phone one day and she said some doulas are certified within a few months and some take two years. It all depends on how fast you get those certification births in (and not all births can count toward certification, e.g. you can only have one c-section out of those three), paperwork done, etc.

I think you typically have a 2 year deadline. I was able to do mine in 1 year.

Certification time

I took my training in Oct 06, and just THURSDAY recieved word of my certification so Nov. 07. I had sent the packet in early Sept. So it took just under a year to complete the requirements. I had a hard time getting qualifying births....had a homebirth without a certified midwife, then had a birth where the teen mom's bf asked me to leave right before the birth...plus we took several family trips which made it so that I was not able to actively persue getting clients during different time periods. I have a friend now persuing hers, she is hoping to get hers ASAP. It's all in the qualifying births and how fast you can get em!! Blessings, I hope you get yours quickly!!

I think it really depends on how quickly you get births and how easy it is to get drs to sign evals. As a DONA certification member I would be concerned about the amount of traning someone has achieved if they got everything done in 6 months. The goal of certification is education, not let's see how fast I can get it done. I think you will feel better about your won skills if you get a few births behind you, that is why you have a 2yr deadline.

Probably true for a brand new doula, but I have been doula-ing for years, and I'm an experienced (and certified) CBE. It's simply that I've now decided to get DONA certification on top of my other certification (CBE and doula). Hopefully no one will hold against me the fact that my certification requirements may come fairly quickly. Your comment makes me a little nervous! If there's a minimum amount of time that one must wait after their training for their certification births, I wish that would have been said by DONA up front.

Oh, well that changes everything!

There is an Application and there is a place to work experience. So if you indicate that you have been a certified CBE for a number of years that will be taken into concideration. This is the problem with not knowing the whole story . I think it will be just fine, do not be nervous. There is no minium time, although if it was someone new, i might ask them what other experiences they have had. It is surprizing what doesn't get put in the app but when you talk to someone much more info comes out.

I feel like I'm going backwards in getting my cert! I've had 3 births, my training was in late march. two of those births don't count--one was right before my cert pack came, and the other was a very fast labor--she arrived at the hospital at 8 cm. For me, it will probably take a year and a half.

Thanks for clarifying. I hadn't been nervous at all before about the certification process, so I'll just keep expecting it will go smoothly.

I think it just depends. I am going through ALACE and you need 6 births but 3 of them can be prior to worskhop. since i have been doing this for years now I have more than that done. Now all i have to do is get the last 3 I have 2 moms in december and 1 in jan but not sure if the one in jan will count but have 2 in feb. so i am hoping by the middle of next year I will finally be certified.

try and set your self a goal for all the requirements and then the rest is up to th organization you are certifying with
