Red face How to choose the right certification

I am just starting out and have done a little research here and there, trying to find a program that is right for me. What is the best way to figure out which program is right? They all seem similiar, but I know that there must be differences because they are different programs! How did y'all choose the right program for you?

This is the best site I've found to compare side by side. Each program is unique and offers different things so it's a matter of what works best for you. and let us know what you choose!

You could start by searching the forums for posts about each organization you're interested in. That in particular was very helpful to me when I was trying to figure out the right way to go.

Things to consider:
Cost
Location of Training
Steps to Certification
Membership fees

the biggies are
Code of Ethics and Standard's of Practice. Does the org you are certifying with have COEs and SoPs that you're willing, and able to abide by?

I went with a training that was local.
I also went with one that does not require me to pay annual membership fees just to stay certified.
I then recertified with a distance learning org, because I enjoy on line learning.

I certified through Childbirth International since I have small children and this seemed to fit my life at the moment. I think I may try to get to a conference in the fall, however, as I think that would be very beneficial.

I read all of the info on the various websites and narrowed it down to two based on their mission, philosophy etc. Then I joined both of their on-line discussion groups to ask some questions. I chose CAPPA because when I asked the question "Why did you choose CAPPA" of the other doulas on the forum I really connected with responses about being supported, feeling like family, getting quick/personal responses from the staff including the founders etc. I also really like the multiple certifications and the mission CAPPA has of creating a network of birth professionals to help women from conception through the first year.

When I asked the same question of the other org I got good responses but they just didn't speak to what I was looking for in an organization.

I really like the idea of having training locally and online, but I don't think there is anything in my area. Of course, I'm sure if I do my training online, then I could find workshops or extra things on the side to go to locally to help out. For example, I'd also like to do maybe some prenatal yoga also, I know that it was invaluable to me when I was pregnant, especially at the end. I think it could really help other women, but so many are afraid to try or might not know about the benefits! I was never the 'yoga type' but I wouldn't trade that experience for anything!

Why I chose CAPPA - CANADA

I had already done a lot of training towards my childbirth educator certification through a joint hospital/college program when it shut down due to the director retiring and nobody else wanting to take on the program. CAPPA - CANADA was willing to tailor their CBE program to take account of my previous experience. When I looked at their requirements to become a certified birth and postpartum doula, coupled with the fact they had workshops locally and their prices were reasonable, they made the most sense for me. I've just finished my workshops and loved the workshop content, the instructor and getting to know the other women in the classes.

I'm going with a local program which is through DONA. They offer it through a private location in Edmonton as well as at NAIT. But as far as PPD or CBE I will probably have to go online, because there aren't alot of options locally. I also thought while going through their program it sounded like something I could do. And it is a well recognized. I thought that would be good to have starting out.

I did a lot of research on different programs including reading what different doulas had to write about who they certified with. I was able to glean a lot of insight by perusing the forums here!
I essentially chose Childbirth International as I have three young children, one of whom is still breastfeeding.

Best of luck!

I believe a Post Partum DONA training is coming to Edmonton later this fall. I was talking to the teacher today. I am in the process of organizing one for Fort McMurray, you could always come to it here.

Oh, that is good to know!! I would love to do the PPD training here. I didn't see it on the DONA website when I checked last. Thanks!
Now to find a CBE program . . . .

I did my CBE thru Aviva and am completing thru CBI as well. I plan to also get Lamaze, in the future...

I spoke to Do, the PPD trainer, she said Edmonton may be in June, but she isn't sure yet as her availability isn't so great that month, she is pretty full already.

The PPD training in Fort McMurray will be in late September or early October, I am just finallizing dates for it now and should know in another 1-2 weeks.
