How important is the Apgar score portion of the labor sheet in the DONA certification packet? My Mom doesn't know her Apgar scores, neither do I... obviously, I can't get them from the midwife, and I feel uncomfortable pressuring the mom to get them just for my certification... I met this client the day before she gave birth!
Do I have to throw out the entire birth because of the missing info? Can someone who's certified with DONA help me out with this?

Was the baby given right to mom? Did there ever seem to be any problems with the baby or were mom and babe separated for a long period of time? I think if the answer is no you could assume high APGARs, around 8 or 9.

This Member Says "Thanks!" to AmandaB For This Post:
They do Kangaroo Care at this hospital... the baby is placed right on Mom and left there for sometimes a couple of hours, vernix and all. So, there were not even any measurements taken before I left the hospital. When I did my postnatal, they obviously had the height and weight, but didn't know the Apgar... I have to assume it was high, too-- the baby moved and cried, and quieted right down as soon as she was placed on mom-- she nursed right away. I just have the "official" Apgars to deal with.
Thanks for any help from our DONA cert committee members

The peds at my recent birth gave me an 8/9 for one minute apgar but I couldn't get any more info out of them after that. Will that be sufficient?
If you recieved 2 numbers like 8/9, that is most likely both scores: 8 for 1 minute scoring and 9 for 5 minute scoring. That is generally the scores most babies receive. A score of 10 is not that common. Babies must be perfectly pink with no bluish skin anywhere to receive a 10. Hands and feet are rarely pink at 5 minutes.
Nurses score the babies so you could always ask the nurse caring for baby to give you the scores. I would hope It is not a big deal to provide these. I would do it for the doulas at my hospital.
Hope this helps. If you have more questions regarding Apgars, I would be glad to help.

At my third birth, the baby's apgar's were ten and ten. The nurses said no one would believe me when I wrote it down in my notes!

This is what it was like for me when i had Clover! The best experience ever! I loved holding her, slime and all!
I guess I was very lucky. The nurses at my cert births let me look at the babies records (with moms permission!) to get any missing information I needed. I'm sure not allowed.....however....
Yeah, the two numbers could have been both, however the nurse/ped said "oh, she's an 8 or 9, I haven't done them yet..." it was wierd. I'll just put them in there as 8 and 9 cuz she looked great and even nursed after being yanked from mommy for 10 or 15 minutes.

LOL! Its always great to score a baby with a 10/10. I have given 10's at 5 minutes several times but 1 minute scores of 10 are extraordinary. Was this your third birth personally or your third birth as a doula?
