what did you do first?
did you start reading some of the books on the book list (CBI) or start your classes?

I started on the book list first, but now I'm doing everything simultaneously. I'm kind of free form, so I like the flexibility of CBI. For example, let's say I'm reading in a book about breech birth, I'll refer to the same section in the CBI manual, and do my own research online, and maybe blog with what I've learned. Just my own pref though- I think CBI does actually recommend a more linear progress through the material.

I've been reading a lot. I'm auditing a childbirth class right now (thinking of going DONA). Now that I have my first birth to attend (can I call her a client yet?) as a doula, I am trying to find a training class.

Just make sure that births you attend are after you attend your training if you go through DONA or else they won't count.
With CBI, you can attend births or other requirements as soon as you start your training. With orgs like CAPPA and DONA, births must be attended after you have attended their training workshop in order to count.

Totally. I was glad I figured that out before it got too close to the due date to do anything about it. I was going to take the DONA training in the summer, but now I'm traveling (Milwaukee to Madison, WI) to get it in before the birth. Whew!
Thanks for the heads up!

Hi.... In order for the birth you attend to count towards certification you must first attend a DONA approved workshop (if DONA is who you are going to do your training through)
Whether the childbirth class counts or not I do not know. Maybe Dorothy or Amanda will see your post and can respond.
Good luck!!

I started with doing alot of the anatomy and physiology manuals and assignments, at the same time I was reading one of the books and then I would jump to the communications manual. Now I am getting ready to read my next book while I continue reading the communtication manuals. (I am taking the Childbirth Educators course, btw.)

Beth, I too am taking my classes through CBI. I started reading some of the books before I was able to pay for my classes. It seemed to help me understand the manuals more than if I hadn't read any, but that's just me. Good Luck! Have you signed up for your classes yet?

some of the classes have required reading.
I did a lot of reading before my class, and i believe i benifited GREATLY.
instead of focusing on learning the basics, i could direct my attention to learning new stuff, and when we went over baisics, it was like a refresher, which is always good.
i found it was really helpful to have that base of knowledge!
I read, read, read, read. I think the more you immerse yourself, the better off you are!
