Talking Childbirth Options Class I hosted was a HIT!

I got an idea to have a childbirth educator, myself, and two student midwives hold a class called Childbirth Options at a local baby boutique. We designed flyers and spread the word. We had about 6 pregnant women attend plus several childbirth professionals who wanted to come and support us. It was so neat! Here is a pic from the event. I got permission from those in attendance to use these pics for promoting the future classes.

That's me in the purple. We started with the CBE talking about different kinds of CBE options. Then I got up and spoke about doulas. Then the MWs got up and spoke about patient rights, the difference in the medical and holistic models of care, and passed around pictures and statistics in midwifery and homebirth. The best part of the entire thing was that the MWs stressed that birth perfection was not a goal and that we need to hold ourselves to comfortable and achievable standards and not to an extreme perfection and that everyone birth differently.

The pregnant women walked away excited and talking about how empowered they felt. They were excited and asked a lot of questions.

We gave away goodie bags with gift certificates to our services and other samples and goodies.

Just wanted to share this idea in hopes that other doulas might be able to do this in their community.

What a great idea! I'm so glad it was a hit. I'm also really happy to hear that you are all working together because I feel like I am fighting an uphill battle here lately. *sigh*

This is a great idea Wendy and thanks for sharing it with us. Love the pics as well. I think this type of class would be welcome in just about any location. Women do like to know of their options, especially if they always thought that they did have any! I'd love to hear of more ladies here holding these types of classes as well.

Great idea! I was just telling mamamichelle the other day how badly I wanted to host a baby expo. This seems so much more managable! You've got me all excited! Thanks!
