bf page on my website
Hi Sistah's!!! I'm working on my web site and was thinking of doing it differently by having the page be bf myths vs reality. I went looking through some of my old LLL stuff and can't find my notes from waaaay back then. I was thinking something like (now remember these are of the top of my head).
If I had previous breast surgery I can't nurse. then an explanation of the ways a woman can nurse her baby even without a full supply.
BF is too hard on the family - bonding, involving Dad etc
I don't want to be stuck at home all the time - bf in public/our law re public bf
nipple confusion - it can be overcome and baby can go back to breast
baby allergic to my milk - talk about food sensitivities
can't nurse because of med - explanation of meds in mothers milk
ETC
I'm curious what your ideas are for myths. I just can't seem to think of very many.
One of the best misconceptions I heard recently was, "I couldn't nuse because my nipples are inverted from smoking cigerettes." I just stood there and was so shocked I couldn't speak. Sometimes it's like talking to a brick wall if the mother doesn't understand the importance of bf to her baby's health.
So if you ladies would be so kind and give me some ideas I wouls really appreciate it.
Thank You sooooo Much!!!

Interesting idea...I think it's a great idea!
Speaking of myths....I just heard the most shocking thing from a client the other day, there was confussion about whether she was going to bre vs bottle feed and her English was not 100% so when we (the RN & I) finally figured it out it out, seems that mom wanted to b.f. but was saying both b/c she thought formula was better for her baby. Turns out that dad (who was older and in his fifties) was very proud to be making enough money to be able to afford formula and they both just figured it was the best thing since most wealthy people in their country (El Salvador) bottle feed.
It took a while, but we were able to explain that breast NOT bottle was best.

A fantastic page to go to is: Breastfeeding Myths Debunked.
It will link you to four different pages full of breastfeeding myths listed and explained by Dr Jack Newman.
You can copy and distribute them without further permission.

Aussie you just saved my ass!!! Thank You!!!
Everyone else too, thank you for all your ideas.
I'm kinda in a panic because I'm doing a baby fair in a couple weeks and I'm totally unprepared. I have to get some pages up on my website! I'll have tri-folds, business cards, and hopefully a poster made up. Unfortunately I don't have a digital camera and I don't have many pictures of babies. I know I'm off topic My website will be on all of my literature, I want to get return address labels, does anyone know if VistaPrint might do that for free?
Thank you

One other "advantage" I often bring up at meetings is the travel advantage. I tick off how many places I have nursed or I have seen other mamas nurse their children. How easy peasy lemon sneezy it is to BF and travel ~ no warming, they're always the right temperature, no sterilization needed, and no measuring, plus they come in pretty packages!

Ok that is a huge advantage but it can't top the difference between midnight feeding. Everyone knows the times when in the middle of the night when you are trying to get your babe back to sleep by rubbing/tapping their back but after a few mins you realize that it is just not going to work.
So if you are bottle feeding the ritual begins....get out of bed, pick up babe, turn on the light, walk down stairs, fill the bottle (well after awhile you start to get orgainzed and have it prepaired in the fridge ready to go), and warm the bottle! Do this all a lot of the time while your tiny babe screams waiting for food, it is heart renching! Also dont forget that by this time the babe is FULLY Awake, he mostl ikely wont go back to sleep very easily even with a full tummy and as he gets older he may want to not just eat but play since he is fully awake! (That is all you need in the middle of the night, every night a babe that wants to spend at least an hr awake like it is the middle of the day.) Can you say sleep deprovation!
Now picture a BFing mom's midnight feeding...
grab baby from either the crib right next to the bed or just roll over in the family bed and pop the babe on and drift back off. Once babe is done, he will be blisfully asleep cuddled in to mommy. Now mommy can either keep babe with her and enjoy the convience of the family bed or move the babe back to her crib. All this without even having to turn on the Lights!!!!
That is all I have to tell anyone who is contemplating bottle feeding vrs breast, nevermind the heath bennies!

My favorite story to tell women is when my dd was about 2 months old and my husband was away at Drill Sgt School. I locked my keys, purse, phone etc in car at Walmart. I had one friend in the entire area and of course, it is time to eat (when isn't it time to eat at that age). I was able to just feed her while standing in the middle of the parking lot waiting for a lock smith to come and open the car. What would I have done if I was bottle feeding? Was Walmart going to just give me the bottle, formula warm water I needed? Even if they were kind enough to do that was I going to just give her a bottle straight out of the package without sterilizing it first? I was very thankful that day!!!!
