International B/F Icon?!
Here is a e-mail that I had recieved from the board of birthNETWORK. I thought that maybe someone from this forum could come up with something!
Encouraging the Natural Family Living Community into Action!
In Search of an Icon: Breastfeeding Symbol Contest
The image of a baby bottle on an airport sign announcing the location of a "parents lounge" infuriated us and got us thinking: Isn’t there an international symbol for breastfeeding? We called around. Spoke to lactivists and breastfeeding organizations all over the world. No one had seen or heard of an international symbol for breastfeeding. This is our official call for entries. The women’s bathroom sign . . . the handicapped parking sign . . . the no-smoking sign. How would you like to see your breastfeeding design up there with the greats? Not only will you give the breastfeeding movement a powerful communication tool while influencing countless moms to breastfeed—you’ll also make history! The symbol will be available for use on signage, T-shirts, lunch boxes, and tote bags. As the winner, your photo will appear in an upcoming issue of Mothering magazine, along with your winning artwork. Please submit your design by August 31, 2006. Mail entries to:
Breastfeeding Symbol Contest
PO Box 1690
Santa Fe, New Mexico 87504
Or e-mail to laurat@mothering.com.

My suggestion would be LLL's symbol. It is all ready recognized the world over. I don't know if they would be willing to share it, but I do know a little of its history.
The woman who designed their logo had two young children she was killed in a tragic car accident. Somewhere in Texas? I don't remember, all I remember is that I found it to be such a sad story. I read it in old issues of New Beginnings.

I like most of them -- but I think alot of them could be mistaken for a Mom just holding her baby. Number 1 has the boob popped out --- hard to mistake what shes doing there.

My vote went for #10. I like the simplicity, I might mention that I also enjoyed #7.

I voted for 7 this morning. When they first started this my suggestion was the LLL logo because it is already recognized world wide, but they must not have wanted to use it. It will be so neat to actually see one of these used all over the worls as a universal symbol. Hey! Maybe we can make a bumber sticker with it over at cafe' press!

A few weeks ago I also sent an email with a short list of internationally recognised symbols for breastfeeding but they were already way too excited to unveil a new one and basically pish-poshed my pointing out that they were trying to find a symbol that was already filled, LOL! Oh well.

I also voted for #7 a couple of days ago. I was really drawn to it. I would love to see a sticker from cafe-press. Maybe something to put on a car window. (my husband doesn't like me putting bumper stickers on the car.....silly boy )

I looked at these the other day. I haven't voted yet because I can't make up my mind.
