Breastfeeding and GER

Anyone have any resources or information on breastfeeding a baby with GER, besides what comes up in the normal search?

Mom is bf'ing exculsively, but sometime using bottle of pumped milk. Baby cries A LOT and only sleeps well on its stomach. Baby might have eaten an hour or so and if you lay her down on her back she will throw up whatever is left. She was born at 38 weeks. Mom is trying feeding in up-right positions and will even sleep with baby on her chest so baby can sleep on her stomach. She is also cutting out dairy. I have given her information about elimination diets and Kellymom's info on reflux. Baby was tested to make sure surgery wasn't necessary, and it isn't. Oh, mom has Lyme's disease and Rynaulds (sic). If that make a difference.
I am getting her hooked up with an LC. I am hoping I can get Allison Hazelbaker to work with her. Have to go find her phone number.

My son has/had GERD and was on meds for 9 months- it's a long frusterating path. He is 3.5 and still throws up often or sometimes just getting tipped upside down will have a little "ick" come out.

I pumped exclusively the entire time- he was early and never did latch on right despite several different LCs, LLL leaders etc. At one point he was loosing so much weight that we switched to breastmilk with formula mixed in to up the calories as much as possible. His ped was very supportive but also wanted me to pump to see exactly how much was going in vs. coming out which is hard to do otherwise.

Some tips- elevate the crib to about 30 to 45 degree angle (VHS tapes work well) . DS actually slept in his car seat for about 3 months because it had a better angle. If she can prop him up for at least 45 min after feeding, it'll reduce the pain. More frequent short feedings will also help some. Diet made no difference for me- I eliminated just about everything (for about 4 days, I only ate chicken- nothing else!) and slowly added stuff back in- no change.

If all else fails, the meds do work but the side effects can be very shocking. I had a very alert 3 month old who once on Reglan and Zantac would just stare into space for hours. We now know that dizziness is a major side effect of the Reglan (probably also explains why he screamed worse in the rear-facing car seat!).

HTH, I'd be happy to correspond with her via email if it'd help.

Thanks I will pass the info along...not even the car seat seems to be upright enough for this baby girl. 45 minutes upright doesn't seem to be long enough either. Mom is a champ is committeed to doing whatever will help her dd.

Perhaps she can keep the baby upright in a sling/babytrekker/snugli for as much of the day as possible. If she has $$$ to burn, those "ambi beds" on askdrsears.com are pretty cool too.
