My son has/had GERD and was on meds for 9 months- it's a long frusterating path. He is 3.5 and still throws up often or sometimes just getting tipped upside down will have a little "ick" come out.
I pumped exclusively the entire time- he was early and never did latch on right despite several different LCs, LLL leaders etc. At one point he was loosing so much weight that we switched to breastmilk with formula mixed in to up the calories as much as possible. His ped was very supportive but also wanted me to pump to see exactly how much was going in vs. coming out which is hard to do otherwise.
Some tips- elevate the crib to about 30 to 45 degree angle (VHS tapes work well) . DS actually slept in his car seat for about 3 months because it had a better angle. If she can prop him up for at least 45 min after feeding, it'll reduce the pain. More frequent short feedings will also help some. Diet made no difference for me- I eliminated just about everything (for about 4 days, I only ate chicken- nothing else!) and slowly added stuff back in- no change.
If all else fails, the meds do work but the side effects can be very shocking. I had a very alert 3 month old who once on Reglan and Zantac would just stare into space for hours. We now know that dizziness is a major side effect of the Reglan (probably also explains why he screamed worse in the rear-facing car seat!).
HTH, I'd be happy to correspond with her via email if it'd help.
