The events that take place during a woman’s birth, and how she and her baby are treated during the birth and postpartum period, have a long-term effect on how new mothers and babies interact with each other. Gentle birth practices and consistent postpartum hospital protocols that encourage breastfeeding and infant bonding can decrease the rates of postpartum depression and post-traumatic stress, while increasing the duration of a breastfeeding relationship.
