CBE questions!
Hey ladies! I just got a call from my midwife today. I have awesome news! She and I had lightly discussed having CBE classes in their office. This office consists on 2 CMN and 3 ob/gyn and 1 gyn. She had expressed that she has not been very happy with the hospital based CBE classes. She called today to tell me that if I was still interested, she would love to have me have my CBE classes in their waiting area after hours! I would be the one that the students pay, and I won't be a employee of the office, but they would direct all their patients my way before the hospital's classes! So, OMG, what do I do! I have not gotten certified just yet, cause I was not sure of the opprotunity of teaching! Now, I have one! I'm thinking of going with either PfB with Lamaze International, or Advanced Birth Concepts with Connie Livingston.
My questions is....do you think that it would be okay to teach BEFORE I get certified? Would any of you share some of your teaching plan ideas? How much do you charge for classes? How long does your classes go? What day of the week works best? What supplies do you suggest that I get? Is there a great teaching 'kit' that has handouts and other teaching materials that I can buy? Do you make up your own hand outs? Do you have a set curriculum?
Okay, I'll stop for now! Please help!

Erin, how far are you from Columbus OH? I am co-hosting a PfB Lamaze training seminar Sept. 29 - Oct. 1 here. By all means...if you want to teach, do so! If you attended this seminar, you could claim the title of "Lamaze Trained Childbirth Educator" as soon as the seminar is over! This might help with credibility among some potential students until you are able to officially complete the course (which you can do at your own pace). I'm sure that Advanced Birthing Concepts is a good class, and that Connie is a great Instructor, but they do not have the same name recognition nor prestige that Lamaze International has. It's my understanding that your options are wide open if you go through Lamaze (for both private and hospital classes). If you'd like me to send you some detailed info, via email, on location, lodging, etc., PM me! I'll be there (of course!), and I think that ctowndoula on here is planning to attend also. She's already a LCCE, but she hasn't been to a PfB seminar before, so I'm excited that she may be coming! I would LOVE for you to be able to come, too! Any chance?

And from the other team!! lol I love PfB Lamaze. They do say that once you attend a workshop you can advertise as a Lamaze Trained Educator...you just can't say your certified (obviously). I can't say enough about what a wonderful instructor Teri is...I went to the seminar feeling like I would never even know where to start. I left there ready to design my own course outline and I really felt I had all of the tools to do it. The only thing holding me back right now is the actual book learning. I have a couple more books to read before I will feel ready to teach. Anyway, if you feel you don't have much learning to do (about childbirth) but just need to the tools to teach it I think just attending the seminar may give you the confidence to start teaching right away. Did you notice there is a seminar in Springfield, MO in Aug??? Honestly, I can't say enough about how happy I am with this decision!!

oh, and once you attend a PfB seminar, you are welcome to attend others in the future for free if you feel you need a refresher or just want to get new ideas etc! She is also very gracious about payment plans for the class...all you have to do is ask...
I guess Lori and I were typing at the same time lol

Erin~
This is soooo exciting! I find myself jealous again! This is exactly what I want to do!
I would start by going to then looking up CBE handouts or something. Find the websites that give out freebies to CBEs and then any other samples that you can find. Most of the samples that we as Doulas get would work too.
Make sure you start marketing other places besides that office. Perhaps a little blurb in your newspaper about "New classes being offered yadayada". Go to other MW & OB offices and let them know too.
Good luck, and please let us know how it goes (I ask for selfish reasons )
Ash

What are you/or planning on charging for classes? I was thinking of having either 6 or 7 week series and maybe 20/class. I will have to compete with the hospital classes, and they are only about $40, for a four week series. So I have to come up with some marketing magic to make people WANT to come to my classes even if they do cost more! I think the local Bradley classes run any where from $140 to $220 a series, but they are 12 weeks long!
Sorry, I'm thinking out loud! LOL
Thanks for some more insight!

Have you ever heard of a revolving class schedule? My friend who lives in Fort Wayne, IN had a kind of cool and different CBE series. There was never a ending or beging to the class series. They just kept revolving the series. So couples would be given the schedual, and then they could drop in on any class. I can see pros and cons to this way, but I thought it was pretty unique! Have any of you other ladies ever heard of this?

yeah I can say Im a Lamaze Labor Support Specialist, but if I want to use their name like on business cards or their logo, I need to get their permission as in filling out paperwork, etc... or at least that's what I read in the manual...
