Question Do you teach CBE classes and if so, who did you get training from??

I know there is probably a thread on here somewhere about this topic, but I can't seem to find what I want.....I would love to incorporate teaching CBE classes at some point in the future with my doula work....I would like to know all of the certifying agencies there are to choose from (Bradley, Lamaze, etc) and what the differences are?? Do you like the organization you went through and why? I hope this doesn't sound confusing...maybe I am not wording it right. It is Monday, after all!! As always, thanks so much for any information my doula sisters!!

I'm trained thru CAPPA. Not teaching yet tho. I like their program because I can make the classes my own, not follow someone's set curriculum (i.e. Bradley).

Others I would consider later on are Passion for Birth and/or ALACE.

Thank you, Heather. I think I had heard of Passion for Birth at my Doula training workshop.

Dottie~
I teach CBE to my Doula clients. I am hoping to join the PfB with our taxes next year. Our CBE at the hosp is leaving and we are trying to get it worked out so that I can teach there when I am done.
Right now I am not trained from any org. I researched and decided to go with Lamaze and that's the philosophy that I am going with until I can get trained and start. Just like anything else, you need to look and figure out which one works the best for you!
HTH!!

I've been a Bradley teacher since 1992 and I'm very glad I chose this organization over others because it gave me a good solid foundation for teaching. I chose the Bradley method to train through because this is what I used to prepare for the birth of my first son and since I knew I wanted a natural birth this method really helped me prepare for that.

You do receive a teacher's manual (which I'm very grateful I had in the early years of teaching) and are expected to keep pretty close to it when teaching classes, but over the last 14 years I have certainly put my own touches on classes and don't follow everything to the letter...and I don't know of any Bradley teacher that does follow it completely!
I think if I'd had to make up my own classes in the beginning I would have struggled a lot. It was nice to have classes lined out for me, and hey, why reinvent the wheel...I mean if something has been working for so many years in preparing women for birth I'd rather follow along than struggle on my own trying to figure it out, ya know?

I would email or call each organization and hopefully you can figure out which one would best fit your philosophy of birth.

Good luck!
Amy

I'm a HypnoBirthing Pracitioner. I used hypnosis for my last birth and that lead me to become an educator. I worked on my Birthworks training for over a year but never completed it. I was also very tempted (and still am) to become a Lamaze instructor after attending one of their annual conferences.

The reason I chose HypnoBirthing was because it was really different and could be taught in 5 classes. It was something people would be more likely to seek out. Lamaze is what people perceive to be taught in hospitals (often not the case), Bradley-very well known but twice as many classes, Birthworks and Birthing from Within are both excellent as well but not nearly well-known enough and I worried about attracting business.

Although I used Hypnobabies for my birth I chose HypnoBirthing for my certification bc it was more available (the trainins that is). The founder, Mickey Mongan is the creator of the original hypnosis for childbirth organization and as such she protects it's copyright quite fiercly (can't blame her) and also is very insistant on pure HB being taught (can't blame her there either as she doesn't want to dilute her program or have too many discrepancies which is basically what happend with Lamaze) THe downside is you have little to no creative freedom. There is a manual to be followed and you cannot alter the amount of classes you give (I got reprimanded for offering 3 private classes-instead of 5 ) I HAVE found creative ways to demonstrate and explain things which has made my classes more entertaining. It can be a balancing act when trying to inform students about hospital procedures WITHOUT going too far into a discussion on interventions (which is a no no) which as a doula can feel counter-intuitive BUT I have witnessed some amazing births so I can't deny its effectiveness.

In the future I might go for my Lamaze certification as I have so much respect for them as an organization and there many accomplishments in the birthing world (they are responisble for soooo many studies on interventions).

I plan on becoming a CBE through ALACE. I did my doula training through them and love it. The CBE training is corraspondence.. it is 7 modles and when you are done you have the lessons plans for your 7 classes all ready for you.

I am working on my LCCE through Passion for Birth. What I have liked about it so far is, I ma only out maybe $200 at this point -- I can pay and bite off chunks a little at a time, it's not a whopping $800 payment all at once, or whatever -- I can't afford that.

Now I am waiting for a training to come semi-close to me...

I'm almost finished with my certification through Hypnobabies. I LOVE IT! I love that you teach it exactly as the founder, Kerry, specifies. No guess work and it is time-tested and works beautifully! It's such an easy but comprehensive course to teach. I happen to agree with everything she teaches. I love that the course is more than the hypnosis but nutrition, choosing a birth location, optimal fetal positioning, etc, etc, etc.

I am a certified through ICEA as an educator. I love the program & it was reasonably priced. The workshop was excellent & I learned so much.

I would recommend checking out all the programs available and going with the one that best describes your views on childbirth.

"ICEA's philosophy of family-centered maternity care is founded on freedom of choice based on knowledge of alternatives" and that fit me perfectly. I like being able to give my parents all the tools possible to have the birth that they desire and I don't think that I would be able to do it as well if I was limited to one style.

If a couple is interested in a specific style (ie Bradley, Lamaze, Hypnosis) I can refer them to an educator that specializes in that.

Check out www.ICEA.org for more information!

Thumbs up Childbirth International

I chose Childbirth International for my CBE training.
They have a great distance learning program, are quite thorough and their materials are very comprehensive.
You can teach your own lesson plans, and complete everything at your own pace (with 3 years to finish).
I have chosen not to certify, but if you do go through CBI their certification is for life and you do not have to remain a member of their organisation (which has its pro's and con's).
Choose something that really resonates within you as to how you feel about birth and what you want to teach other mamas.
My own CBE courses have become an eclectic mix of just about everything.
Good luck!

Thumbs up Compare compare

Does anyone have a comparison chart like you had for the different doula certifying organizations? Or a list of them all?

Thanks
