Childbirth Classes at the hospital

I think I forgot to post about my childbirth class that I taught on Monday. For those who don't know me - I teach privately in my own office and then for almost two years I have taught at a local hospital. I started out as a sub and hated doing that because my teaching style is so different from the other educators. The other educators typically just sit in front of the class and talk and intermingle some posters into there. With me I like to utilize all learning styles so I use powerpoints which have the posters already in them so I don't have so shuffle and look for the right pictures. I talk with them, they talk with each other, we get up and move and do things, and the list goes on. So my style didn't fit and there was an issue with some of the other educators (who are all nurses) not liking the way I taught because when it came to evaluation time I always got high marks and when they had to evaluate both of us on the same sheet I came out ahead. It caused problems and I think it was the reason why I was moved to another location and given the job of teaching things like refresher, grandparents class - both one day classes. I was much more comfy doing this since I hated subbing.

So late last year I was offered to move to another hospital within the system (I will still teach grandparents, refresher, and happiest baby at the other location, but am adding more classes). The best part was that I would be the only educator there - lots more freedom and no subbing. So on Monday I taught my first class in the series for the year and it went GREAT!!! I had seven couples - which is fantastic because last year at this hospital the classes were cancelled all the way through the end of March because they didn't have enough interest.

The best was when I took the pregnancy bellies that my dh made (you can see them here http://mdhardy.net/classes.html). I got two dads to put them on and let the moms slowly load them up with weight. It was great. Everyone laughed and had a blast, and I told the mamas to bring their cameras because we will be using these bellies in future classes.

I love teaching my own classes so much more and love teaching a huge room of people too.
