Passion for Birth Seminar in Sacramento, 2-23
FINALLY! I get to attend my seminar! I am so excited. I put this on the calendar in case anyone is interested.
Jill? Jill? Are you interested???? Maybe we could meet for lunch, at least? Not like 90 minutes is so far away, but I will be in Sac the whole weekend.

Hey, it's been so ling since I got all my materials, I have a few questions.
About the presentation part -- we sign up the first morning of the training, yes? So someone could take our topic? We prepare in advance, right? So we can bring materials with us? I was thinking about preparing two topics, in case one gets pulled by someone else.
Or is it more impromptu?
Do you remember what you needed to have done before the seminar? Observation of classes? Attendance at births? ANything else if you can remember? I need to pull my materials out again.

Stacie,
You don't need to prepare before hand for the teaching part - there is an actual format you follow that Teri will introduce during the course. Going in with an idea of what you want to cover, how and having the materials with you is a good idea. If you do prepare loosely a couple of topics you will be that much further when you start planning idea for your course design. You do the 'teaching' part on the last day and it really isn't that scary - instead it is very supportive and encouraging.
I don't think you had to have observed a class or attended any births yet - but it is helpful if you have.

Shawna is right...it is very impromptu...we all prepared the night before. The only thing I'd suggest is to have a topic in mind in case you want to bring any props. I just happened to have my birth ball and did my teaching on that. The thing that reduces the fear is when you realize the reason for the teaching isn't really to evaluate your teaching but to learn the format of designing your class series. It was still scary but not nearly as bad as I had feared it would be. lol
And you don't need anything prepared before the seminar. The only thing I really remember her asking about is if anyone had completed anything from the PfB Learning Task Journal they might want to share. Just bring a pen and a small notebook though you don't need to write much down since she will give you a handy spiral bound book with most of the weekend outlined!

Shawna is correct in that you don't have to have these things done before attending the seminar. One can attend right after they sign up without having done anything at all. Do know, however, that whatever births you've attended as a doula DOES count for birth observations and class observations for doula cert./training can count for class observation (if you've observed a Lamaze class, or other class that is approved by Teri).

Cool Stacie -- let us know how it goes! I have a PfB seminar coming to the state in May and am deciding whether or not to do it or not???.....I am very torn between PfB and CBI right now! I just can't decide and am waiting for some "divine intervention" to come my way! Enjoy and let us know how it goes.

I don't know if you've looked lately but they've (PfB) recently launched a new website, blog and newsletter so check those out. I just got an email about it this morning and I am super excited about the upgrades/changes! Anything that might help you make a decision, right!
Is CBI completely distance learning? I can't remember? One thing that might help you make the decision is figuring out how you learn best. Lamaze is completely self-study in that it is up to you to figure out what you need to learn based on their self-evaluation. It is a very helpful tool. The reading list is suggested, not required. For instance, if you have been a LLL leader for 5 years you probably don't need to read/learn more about breastfeeding. You decide. I think I understand that CBI has modules you complete? I think both ways are great for different people. What PfB does, though, is teach you how to be a teacher, a dynamic teacher. That is the part that I felt I needed the most help in. I can learn the material on my own (though I would love the modules, too lol) but I really felt I needed help in the actual teaching side. I have this problem with feeling like I have never learned enough so I think going through the modules would actually give me confidence I am lacking right now. I think there was mention that they might start offering them separtely...if they do I might buy a few of them in the areas I feel I need more info in. They both have such great things to offer!
So, have I made it even harder to make the decision! lol

I likethe way you described the teaching part, though, because that is where I think I probably lack the most confidence and if they have the capability to help me become a "dynamic" teacher then I would probably lean more toward their way. It is just SO hard to decide!
