That's wonderful!!! Congrats!! Becoming a CBE is on my list of things too, after becoming a doula and a CLE..

That sounds like a great plan, Stacie!!! Truthfully, I have been thinking of doing the same thing...certifying with Lamaze as a CBE, that is. I don't plan on stopping being a labor doula, but I think it would be nice to be able to teach classes some, too. I being a CAPPA Certified Labor Doula, but I also think that Lamaze is a name that is very well known and already widely accepted. That's why I'm considering going with them as opposed to the CAPPA CBE.
I haven't gone past just thinking about it yet, so I'll be looking at that link that you gave for Passion for Birth! Thanx for posting that!

Stacie.....You've really got my 'wheels a turnin'!!! My dh and I discussed this possiblity this morning, and he is really supportive of me certifying with Lamaze. So.....now, I guess the main thing that I need to do is to get my nerve up to go for it! Why is that so hard to do??? Ok...I think I know..... I'm a little apprehensive because I want to make sure that I don't have to give up one (being a doula) for the other (being a CBE). Thanx again for supplying the Passion for Birth link; I looked at their website, and it really does sound like a good way to go about Lamaze certification!
So....what's your time table for starting?

Well....weird!!!
The Passion for Birth link isn't working at all, now!!! I think it's on their end, though. I hope it's up again soon, 'cause I was just getting ready to go over some of the costs with dh! ...figures!!!

Stacie,
Thanks for supplying the brochure link! I printed it out. I probably will get in touch with Teri about a few questions I have. I do have more than adequate birth experience as a doula, so I hope that those will count (well, I guess that I ought to have up-coming births, too...so it really shouldn't be a problem). Another thing is that I had observed/audited a Lamaze class (with an LCCE instructor) in the fall of 2004 when I was pursuing my labor doula cert. I still have all the observation forms, so hopefully that would count, too. I'll have to contact her to see. I'll let her know that I found out about the organization from you!
Oh...almost forgot! Where would I attend a training? Well, since I cannot view the website at the moment, I can't remember what was listed. I *think* I remember that everything already set so far was quite a drive for me (but I'd do it if I had to). I did see, though, that there was a list of probable states/locations for the second half of this year. One of those states was Indiana (I'm in Ohio, so that might be do-able). We'll see....

Stacie....I'm excited!!!
I owe you a world of thanks for pointing me in the direction of Passion for Birth! I enrolled this evening!!!!!! I'm soooo excited!!!!!
I have found two other interested doulas, and Teri has put us in touch with a physical therapist in Columbus who also wants to have a seminar. I think that we are going to bring one to Columbus, Ohio! We've been in contact with Teri and are now thinking of dates (probably next fall or winter).
The cool thing is that I actually live 35 min. to an hour from Columbus (depending on which area). The closest LCCEs to me are in Columbus (none in my local area). My general 'stomping ground' is closer to my home, and the 'locals' tend to avoid "the big city" , so I'm not feeling a competition issue at all. Not to mention that Columbus is fairly large, so more Lamaze Educators here isn't a bad thing.
Have you been able to enroll yet? I hope you find a seminar that wouldn't be difficult for you to attend! Keep me posted, and let me know what's up!

Ok ladies. All this talk about CBE certification has got me doing my own research. I have not even completed my doula cert yet. I don't know what I am thinking! lol But, in my over achieving defense I have completed all of the requirments with the exception of the births. So here I am. A little birdy just told me that PfB is bringing a seminar to Birminham, AL (only about 1.5 hrs from me) in April or March. Since all the others in the site have been at least 3.5 hours away I am very excited. But, will I be ready by then? Can I scrape up the funds by then? Will my husband kill me if I even bring this up? He has been very supportive to date but I am going to have to be really NICE to him before I bring it up to him since I have been so busy this month. He has been a bit neglected, I admit. I know without a doubt that I eventually want my CBE but I am not sure if this is the right time. Of course I went through this when my doula training came up as well. Ugh! just needed to vent my self doubts! lol

Hi Christy!!
Oh, you sound so much like me! I want to do EVERYTHING!!! No, seriously..... I *think* that I will be quite satisfied with the Labor Doula cert. and the Lamaze cert. I will probably attend a CAPPA Lactation Educator workshop sometime for the knowledge and CEUs, but probably won't choose to certify for that.
Now.... that is very exciting that a seminar is going to be close to you! How tempting!!!! If I were you, I'd get all my facts together before mentioning it to dh. I have been in contact with Teri Shilling via email over the past week; she answered some of my questions which *might* help you to decide whether to check it out with dh or not. Here are the questions I asked that could possibly relate to you and your situation, too (Teri's answers are in ALL CAPS as was in her email to me--not yelling) :
1.
Is there a time limit on how long participants are given to complete
the Passion for Birth Program traditional track in order to sit for
the Lamaze exam? NO TIME LIMIT...ALTHOUGH THERE ARE GUIDELINES. THERE IS ALSO A 'CARROT' - LAMAZE PROVIDES A COUPON FOR $50 OFF YOUR CERT. EXAM FEE IF YOU FINISH WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF SEMINAR
2. What is the average time that it takes for
participants to complete the program on the traditional track? 9 MONTHS TO A YEAR - DEPENDS ON IF THEY HAVE BEEN AT BIRTHS AND OBSERVED A CHILDBIRTH CLASS SERIES AND HOW TOUGH IT IS TO SET UP THE TEACHING EXPERIENCE. ALSO LIFE HAPPENS - THE LAST SEMINAR I DID IN COLUMBUS WAS SMALL - BUT 5 OUT OF 6 PEOPLE GOT PREGNANT AND HAD A BABY WITHIN A YEAR - SO THAT EXTENDS CERTIFICATION USUALLY.
3.
I am an experienced Labor/Birth Doula and have documentation of births
I've attended. Do you allow births already attended by Doulas to
count as the three births to be observed? YES; THERE IS A FORM TO DOCUMENT THIS EXPERIENCE
4. I observed a Lamaze
series in Sept.-Oct. 2004 as a requirement for Labor Doula
certification; the instructor was a LCCE. I have documentation
showing my attendance, as a non-participant, and the topics covered.
Even though I attended more than a year ago, would attending that
Lamaze series still count towards the PfB requirements? YES
SEND MORE QUESTIONS!!
So....the good news is that even if you did attend the seminar way before you were ready to finish the rest of the required steps, that's OK! You could still focus on finishing your Labor Doula cert. steps before focusing on the PfB steps if you want. A bonus is that your required births for CAPPA, and if you observed a Lamaze class for CAPPA, would both count for your PfB requirements, as well! (Note that you could begin teaching if you want and call yourself "Lamaze Trained" until you are able to certify, if you have already attended the seminar.)
Also....She is pretty flexible with the order you in which you complete things, so you CAN attend a seminar right away if you want. (You can also write the seminar cost off of your 2006 taxes, since it's training for your career. Just trying to give you some things to tell dh! )
The website also states that she sometimes accepts payment plans, and to contact her if you might need that option. Feel free to email or call Teri with any of your own questions if you desire. She seems very happy to correspond with those interested. I know a few people that have met her, and they say that she is really great! Keep us posted on what you end up doing, ok?! Even if not now, then maybe you could make PfB and Lamaze a future goal. I warn you, though...Once you get it into your mind, it's hard to shake!!

Stacie....
Hmmm....I'm not sure why you haven't heard from her. ??? I know that at any given time, she could be traveling. Her emails tend to be short & sweet, so I figure that her time is pressed sometimes. I will probably need to contact her within another week or so to get some dates on the books for a Columbus, Ohio seminar. I'll mention you when I do that.
If I were you, I'd try to directly call or email her again with a really catchy subject title! I don't know...something like: Questions before sending in my money!!!!
Let me know if you hear from her, so I'll know if I should ask her about your emails or not.
We've got to get you signed up so we can keep each other on task!!!
