They have a GREAT section of handouts.. You just have to leave their name on them.. I also keep things I got from my CB class and breastfeeding classes.. I copy and will give those out also.

Question Binder Handouts

Hi Ladies,
I want to do an idea like Christy ( I think it was you ) & put together a binder with info or handouts put into it.& I would also like handouts to give to clients.

My question is where do you all get your info at? What are your resources? I would really like to not have someone else name on it.You know like printing from some elses website. However if it comes to that I will ask permission to use it.& I really did not want to have to type something on my own.Not because I am lazy.

Talking

Arg! This is my second time trying to type out this post! The last time, I accidentally closed this window when I went to read a PM. Poof!...it was gone....just like that!

Anyway, I get several of my handouts from Doula Office 2.0 CD ROM. I ordered it from birthsource.com. They are listed in our Alldoulas Resources section, in "Products for Doulas" if you want to take a look. They do have "Perinatal Education Associates" in small print at the bottom of the pages. They give you permission to print them out and hand out to clients with the purchase of the software.

Actually that was me I got articles from Lamaze International, CIMS, Tracy Hartley's website (she gives permission for anyone to use her material as long as you do not alter it - she has some great stuff). I also just "collected" stuff along the way. Pamphlets that I thought were useful through some of the doula group. Also some stuff that other doulas wrote - used with their permission.

Once you start that process you will find that as you look stuff will just seem to "appear" LOL.

How do I access the archives? I'm working on putting together my filing system and getting info in binders. Actually all my stuff is sitting here on the floor and it just sits day after day. I'm sooo frustrated! I should be working on marketing and getting some paying clients. Anyway, I just wanted to say Thanks!

Sorry so long, but I have a lot of info to tell ya!

Okay Susan, I found some really cool sites to get some handouts for my binder and I really want to share! I hope that this helps! Let me know how your binders are coming along!

I sectioned my binders into 5 sections, 1) Pregnancy 2) Labor and Delivery 3) Postpartum recovery 4) Breastfeeding and 5) Basic Baby Care

I found some sites that had great handouts for all sections and some that were great for only specific sections.

I added all my current doula information, like DONA's position paper, Dads and Doulas, the difference between the the different doulas. Lamaze had some great informational hand outs for birth and pregnancy. I had some great handouts that I recieved from a friend of mine that took her CBE classes in a different state than I live in, so I includes them (I'll put one of the hand out here, and you can just copy and paste them into your word processor, just remember to include the author's name, of course!): Here it is:

Quote:
Pregnancy Tips
By Anne Winthrop Esposito

Anne Winthrop Esposito, the former managing editor of American Baby magazine, is a writer and editor who specializes in parenting. She lives in Cranford, New Jersey, and is the mother of a toddler.

Over the course of your pregnancy, your baby must grow and develop from the size of a single cell to a wailing, wonderful seven-pounder (give or take). Nine months may seem interminably long to you, but your body must undergo countless changes in preparation for the big event. Here a some ways to keep comfortable while you wait:

Get Enough Water

You think about every morsel you put into your mouth- Whether it’s to wonder, “Is this good for my baby?” or “If I eat this, will I ever lose the baby fat?” Are you drinking enough water? Although it ahs no calories or vitamins, water isn’t the same as nothing. It transports nutrients through your blood to your baby, keeps your urine dilute to prevent bladder infections, which are common during pregnancy, helps prevent constipation and therefore helps prevent hemorrhoids; and dissipates body heat through your sweat and breathing. How much water is adequate? About eight glasses a day plus a cup for each hour of light activity.

Do Pelvic Tilts

As your baby grows, your abdominal muscles are stretched, and more and more stress is placed on your lower back. Pelvic tilts relieve lower- back pain and, when done at least once a day, even help prevent backaches.

Here’s how to do tilts in the all- fours position: get down on your hands and knees. Keeping your back flat, curve the bottom of your pelvis forward, like a puppy curling his tail under. Hold for a count of five, then return to the neutral position. Do ten per session.

Keep Up With Your Kegels

Your vagina, bladder, rectum and other structures in your pelvic area are supported by a “sling” of muscles called the pubococcygeal (PC) muscles. (They’re what you’d use to stop the flow of urine in midstream.) Among the many potential benefits of strong PC muscles: an easier delivery and recovery, prevention of hemorrhoids and urinary incontinence, and enhanced circulation in your pelvic area. The best way to strengthen your PC muscle is to do Kegel exercises every day.

Here’s one way to “Kegel”. Gradually squeeze your PC harder and harder until you can’t increase the squeeze; hold for up to ten seconds. Slowly release. Do 25 repetitions four times a day. You can Kegel anytime, anywhere, and no one needs to know.

Don’t Forget Your Feet

You may not like hearing this, but most women’s feet grow throughout pregnancy. Several factors contribute to this: normal secretion of the hormone relaxin loosens all the joints in the body, including those in the feet; extra fluid in the tissue means swelling in the feet; and excessive weight gain adds fat to the feet. If you stick with your usual shoe size, you’ll probably be uncomfortable, especially in your last trimester. Your best bet is to be measured by a reputable shoe salesman, and buy one or two pairs of shoes that fit you well- preferably with heels no higher than an inch or so. You won’t feel good unless your feet do.

Take Care of Your Teeth

Because of the hormonal changes in pregnancy, many women notice “pink toothbrush”- that is, their gums bleed slightly and may be puffy and sensitive. If you neglect these early warning signs of gingivitis, you may wind up paying for it later on. The best tack to take? Prevention. See your dentist for a cleaning at least once during your pregnancy (some experts suggest going at least once per trimester); floss and brush religiously; and to prevent cavities, avoid sticky and starchy foods.

Take a Hike

A moderate amount of exercise is recommended for most expectant mothers. It will keep you fit- including, most important, your heart and lungs- and some experts believe a steady program of moderate exercise during pregnancy may even help shorten labor. Your doctor or midwife can recommend which exercises and how much are safe for you. Walking is safe for most pregnant women. Warm up first by strolling slowly for ten minutes, then stride hard enough to make conversation difficult, though not impossible. Afterward give yourself a five-minute cool down- that is, walk at a slow pace to allow your heart rate to return to normal. Your goal should be to work up to 15 minutes of strenuous exercise three to five times a week. Your clothing- especially your shoes- should be comfortable. Don’t exercise if it’s humid or uncomfortably warm.

Eat Often, or “Graze”

You need plenty of calories to nourish yourself and your baby, but your best bet is to have five or six smaller, though healthful, meats, instead of the three large ones you’re probably accustomed to. In the early months, grazing will help stave off morning sickness, because a woozy stomach is likely to be an empty stomach. As your pregnancy progresses and your growing baby crowds your stomach, you simply won’t have much room for food- so much so that in the eighth and ninth month, grazing becomes a necessity, because eating too much at a sitting may force food and digestive juices up into the esophagus , causing heartburn.

Urinate Frequently

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common during pregnancy. To avoid them, drink plenty of fluids so you urinate frequently and keep your urine dilute; avoid “holding it in,” which can increase your chances of UTI; urinate before and after intercourse; and always wipe from front to back after using the bathroom. When you urinate; lean forward to empty your bladder completely.

What’s the most soothing balm for pregnancy discomfort? Keeping in mind your reward; a beautiful, brand new baby!
www.growingfamily.com is a great site that has awesome hand outs about nutrition, exercise, baby care, and other info.

www.evenflo.com was also very helpful!

I put Penny Simkin's Road Map of Labor in my binder, in the labor and delivery section, I bought four copies on DONA's boutique. They are only $.40

CIMS was great for very straightfoward information about inductions, breastfeeding and c/births www.motherfriendly.org

I also like www.about.com they have articles on episiotomies and other birth related issues. Some really helpful articles on PP recovery and depression.

I put a visual diagram on different positions for labor and pushing. One that explains on how to time contractions, and the difference between early labor contractions and active labor contractions. This same diagram shows the cervical change! Very cool.

I added a birth plan out line, and an example of a birth plan.

A sheet that explains on the APGAR test and other things that could happen at a hospital birth.

transitiontoparenthood.com had some awesome stuff for PP

I printed out and put in all 23 handouts from Dr. Jack Newman! They were in PDF format and you can find them at www.bflrc.com just look for Dr. Newman's page on the left hand side of the page, it will take you to a page that will have all 23 handouts!

I would not mind to find some more information for baby care, so if anyone knows a great site besides the awesome information I recieved from eveflo.com and growingfamily.com I would really appreciate it!

I hope this helps! I would love to know what you have!

I am laughing here Christy, because Anwar Fazal is most definately NOT the author of WAB, he only wrote the foreword. It has no author other than LLLI. Just so you know .

I have a link somewhere to a bunch of Elizabeth Pantly's articles about baby care -- I iwll see if I can find it.

You know what is even funnier, the reason I got it wrong is I was using the list from my labor doula training manual instead of dragging out my books. Ooops!! Thanks so much!
