Cheat Sheet for Intervention Pros & Cons
So there has been talk about different interventions and the pros and cons of those interventions and about how we as doulas need to present the pros and cons as objectively as possible. So...
Does anyone have an itemized pro/con list that's objective for epidurals, pitocin these types of things? Perhaps we can come up with that information together. This is something I would love to have handy for talking to my clients, because I have a hard time being objective. So it would be great to have a card that said "Epidural" with a column for Pros, and a column for Cons so we have a talking point, just a mind jogger.
Anyone interested in brainstorming?

I'm actually in the process of making a set of "Interventions" flashcards at the moment, although that's been "in process" for about three months now. I hope to make several different sets on several different topics so I can pull them out during prenatals and leave them with clients to look over.

The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth lays all of this out in a really nice way. I wish she'd update it (not that the info is incorrect, but people like to see 2000's on the study references), but I often use it with clients and students.

I'm actually in the process of making a binder right now. I've been working on medications the last couple of nights. I'm interested in seeing what other people have put together though.

Great Idea
This sounds like a great idea, Megz. Would it be better to do it here or for those interested to work on the lists through e-mail and then post our completed version on allDoulas for feedback?

I usually refer to The Thinking Womans Guide to Birth, and since we are in Canada, I also referance a book for the national guidlines for OB/GYns. ( surprising that many OB's do not follow the national guildlines!)
I like to refer to books or at least have the referances for where I am getting my info...so my clients know that I am just not pulling my info out of my a$$.

I think any Pros/Cons sheet or information on any medical topic needs to include references and places clients can look to find more info if they wish. Having those references also would give clients some creditability when discussing their wishes with their practitioner, too. And yes, it is sad how many docs do not follow current national guidelines or keep up-to-date on studies etc.

I think that that would be a good Idea...We all should for sure put all the pro and cons for different Situations.

Doula Office has one of these in a grid for medications, but there are some things that I'd like to add to it. I can see some things are missing. For instance, epidural advantage can be to control high blood pressure. That's not on there. It has lowers blood pressure under disadvantage though. I haven't evaluated it much closer yet. I will come back to give some input later though and appreciate any of yours.

I'm interested in this. My clients seem to be spaced out so by the time I get the next one I have to skim through everything to refresh my brain. Let me know what you come up with.

Penny Simpkin has a booklet called Comfort measures in childbirth *i think* that lists the benefits/drawbacks and effiecacy of each measure such as epidurals, narcotics, TENS, water/pools, Transdermal water blocks, etc etc. I have mine loaned out right now, but I love it for walking through w/my clients and finding things that they want to try or avoid. It's a great resource.
