CBI Training Manuals - Spelling Errors
I have replied to another thread on this but thought I would post here under a separate topic as many people may not read right through the other thread.
I am really sorry this is a problem. We fully acknowledge that the student manuals that were sent out in the past had a significant number of spelling errors. We have worked hard to correct these. The manuals have now been edited professionally twice and we have run through general spell checks countless times. There are 600 pages of student manuals in the doula course - that is more than 182,000 words. So unfortunately typing errors did occur when we first started. We have gradually worked on these and now feel we have the written manuals free from errors. The online manuals are also free from errors. There is nothing we can do to correct old manuals since they are already printed and sent out. We can however issue new manuals for the cost of printing and postage for students that find it particularly frustrating. Printing the manuals though is not cheap so we are unable to do this automatically for all students.
If a student finds a spelling error in a manual that has been issued since June 2007, or finds an error in the online version of the manuals, PLEASE let us know so we can correct this straight away. We regularly add information about any changes to manuals where content has changed significantly in the student website. This is automatically emailed to all students if they have a valid email address on the student record and their email does not reject the email as spam as sometimes happens.
In regards to international differences, we try and keep spelling as US based as possible. Although we have many students all over the world, we recognize that the bulk of our students are in the <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">USA</st1:place></st1:country-region> so this is the spelling we use. As I was educated in <st1:country-region w:st="on">Australia</st1:country-region> and have lived in the <st1:country-region w:st="on">UK</st1:country-region> and Asia for the last 15 years, <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">UK</st1:place></st1:country-region> spelling is what comes naturally to me! So sometimes I will spell with <st1:country-region w:st="on">UK</st1:country-region> in the manuals without even realizing there is another word used in the <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">USA</st1:place></st1:country-region> - for example yoghurt. Words such as cesarean (caesarean) and pediatrician (paediatrician) will always be spelt using <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">USA</st1:place></st1:country-region> spelling. The only exception to this is if the text is quoting someone from the <st1:country-region w:st="on">UK</st1:country-region>, Europe or <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Australia</st1:place></st1:country-region>. Many of our readings and quotes come from authors or practitioners in these countries so we quote them using the spelling that they use.
Spelling is a priority for us. We have not deliberately ignored the issue. It is simply an enormous task. Hopefully this is now resolved and students receiving new manuals will not have the same degree of frustration. Please, if you come across errors in new manuals or on the website, please let us know.
