So, CBI students, what do you think of the change to the course requirements? Personally I am relieved not to have to work out a way to attend a childbirth class (I'm doing the combined CBE and Birth Doula Course). It was looking like I was going to have to do the hospital course, and probably pay for it, too.
What do you guys think?

I had already done them, so the changes didn't bother me. I didn't have a hard time at all finding a class though, so I would probably rather do that kwim? But the changes sound good
I'm not a CBI student (yet...probably going to do their lactation program when it's available), but I heard about these changes, and I personally don't think it's a good idea to remove the class series observation for CBEs. I think that is really valuable ~ either from the standpoint of learning what local mothers are being taught, or observing a REALLY GOOD class and teacher and REALLY LEARNING from her...or both!
I am a new student and was just looking for a course to take. I think I will still try to find one to attend as I would like to be a CBE as well. I am glad I don't have to make a video now! whew!
I am surprised by the changes. I am still going to find a class to attend because I need to observe a Lamaze class since I did the Bradley for my own births. I feel the class is beneficial to me and will prepare me for a lot of my future clients. I also think I may add LC to my training once it becomes available.

I feel the same way. I will probably try to attend a class here if I'm able. If nothing else, just to know what's being taught. We have two hospitals in our area so I may even try both of them. I too will be adding LC to my training once it's offered.

Do a search and find an individual teacher in your area. That's what I did and I'm going to give her a call in February. I'll have money to pay in February if she wants me to pay.
*Old woman voice* I remember when the Communication assignment was GRADED... and you had to attend a childbirth class of at least 2 hours in length!
Seriously, though, I think they should've kept the class requirement. But apparently a lot of people were having trouble finding a class willing to allow an observer. I had no trouble at all. Maybe they just weren't looking in the right place.

I have to agree with you. This is the first I am hearing of these changes. I observed my CBE class about 11 months ago so this change would not apply to me, but I feel like that observation was extremely valuable in showing me how to structure and organize a class and to also observe what kind of perceptions and ideas the couples are bringing into class. I observed a hospital class and yes there were parts of it that really ticked me off because it seemed like it was teaching "how to be a good patient 101"but I think the teacher did the best she could to promote natural birth in that hospital environment.

Well there aren't any in my area so I would have to go elsewhere. I'm not surprised though. The area I live in is very conservative. But thank you for the link!

Same here! I was shocked when I received the email from Nikki yesterday. I think a class is really helpful when wanting to know what the women in my town are being taught. Of course I know it is a joke if it is anything like it was when I attended during my first pregnancy! . I still plan on attending one if possible. I will also be training for LC when it becomes available.
