Talking Calling All CBI-ers!

I *think* I want to train and certify through CBI, but I'm at that hemming and hawing stage. I trained through CAPPA but never certified and now I'm thinking that I should just do it (certify) and CBI looks very attractive.

I spoke with DH about it tonight and after asking me a few questions, he said that I could spend the moolah and go ahead with it if I wanted to.

What should I know? What do you like about the org and what do you not?
Feel free to PM me, if you'd rather not discuss this in the forum.

Thanks for your input!

I am almost done with my doula training through CBI and I love it! I just have to do my two births one of which is coming up shortly and the next one in MAY unless i get someone else before. I am also doing the CBE training through CBI! What I love is they have their own yahoo groups and talk openly through there but also you can email them and they get back to you quickly! NIkki is wonderful as is everyone else there. the support has always been great through me! I am going to join the PP doula program as soon as I get my doula cert and then also do the Lactation once that starts next month I can't say enough good things about CBI It is a great organization and in my case the Payment plans were just absolutely wonderful

CBI is a great program, in my opinion. Their requirements have changed since I trained, but it's mostly the same. I'm feeling bullet-pointy right now.

Pros
  • Very, very thorough
  • Strong emphasis on communication and personal reflection
  • All the information is online, though you get manuals as well
  • You have your own personal trainer to contact if you need help
  • Has a relaxed and down-to-earth atmosphere, in my experience
  • Very friendly student support
  • Very active Yahoo! list for students
  • No membership costs
  • Recertification isn't required

Cons
  • Smaller and not as well known
  • No in person training, which may make learning physical comfort measures difficult (although if you've already done a CAPPA training, this may not matter as much)
  • No conference, if that matters to you
  • Recertification isn't required

As you can see, I listed the lack of recertification requirements as a pro AND a con, because I understand both sides to that debate. It really just depends on how you feel about it.

Kacy said it best!

I do want to add that I LOVE the Physiology manual and exams. I learned things I didn't even know I didn't know. I love that you see your grades online too. I have had wonderful communication with my trainer and Nikki is an active participant in the group chats. I imagine one day CBI will be as widely known as the others.

I say GO FOR IT!

I really enjoyed my training with CBI. I did the birth doula, childbirth educator, and postpartum doula.

I certified as a birth doula through them and am working on the CBE program now. I really like it. I would like to go to a conference, but I can do that anyway.

I love my training with CBI. I'm doing the duel Doula/CBE courses.
I had a problem a couple of weeks ago and Lynne and Nikki sorted it out very quickly.
Once I have completed my duel training I shall definately go on to do other courses with them.
