Communications Assignment

Hi Doulas,

Just wondering what those of you who have not given birth yet wrote about for your communications assignment. I don't have children yet and I am having a hard time figuring out what to write about. I am thinking of writing about my decision to return to college as an adult or a time that I went though a bad depression. What do you ladies think? Thanks so much.

The communication assignment is a long reflective essay about an event that had lifetime significance to you and resulted in a major change to your life. Most students write about the birth or adoption of their children. As I don't have a child yet I am uncertain what in my life has been that significant. It does say in the manual if you do not have children you can choose to write about a challenging event in your life such as a career change or deciding whether or not to stay in a relationship. I am trying to write about about the deep depression I was in a few years ago but I am having trouble meeting the hefty word requirements with this story. Thanks for the reply!

Hi Annaruth!

I'm a CBI student myself (doing Birth & Postpartum Doula and CBE courses). I'm nearly finished with the Birth Doula requirements and the assignment I have left is the Communication assignment. Like you, I've not had any children. I opted to write about my experience with infertility. However, I considered writing about the death of a family member I was VERY close to. Both topics my trainer said were acceptable.

I think of the two examples you mentioned, that your experience with depression would be an excellent topic.

Contact your trainer, I'm certain they can give you some insight on how to satisfy the requirements. And give yourself plenty of time to complete this assignment, I've been working on mine since January.
