Another celeb choosing surgery (no article)

So 2007 was a huge baby boom in TinselTown and 2008 will welcome a bunch more including another spawn of Spears.

So what has me hoping mad is that this morning the MSN newswire came through to announce in a BIG BOLD headline "Aguillera to choose C-Section". Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! Why???? Her surgery was scheduled for the 10th of January but she has decided to more it up. Again, why???????????????? I am all about women's lib and choice but some need to concider more than just "convenience".

Sorry to sound so bitter but this women wields unworldly power and to take a stance that surgery is no big deal really gets to me. I just need to vent.

I am curious as what will happen when Jamie-Lynn spears is ready to give birth, will a 16yo choose a c-section too??? If that happens ......

You know, just because you don't hear a reason in the tabloids does not mean there isn't a reason. Know of any celebs who are going to announce they have scheduled a cesarean because they have an active herpes lesion not responding to meds? Or because of serious cervical scarring from a previous abortion? Frankly, I cannot imagine that happening! Of course the publicists are going to spin it as a choice!
They certainly may very well be elective cesareans, but I am not going to judge these women too harshly based on the spin we hear in the tabloids.

I have to agree with Utah. While it is sad to see so many celebs choosing elective c-section, we don't really know why. Think of these celebrities and their lifestyles, they may not have the healthy bodies needed to have a healthy, safe birth, but they sure as heck aren't going to let the entire world know they have a disease or problems because of previous abortions. I also wonder how many of these young women who have been in the celebrity spotlight since a young age have been abused and have survivor issues with birth, so they choose what is mentally safe to them and that they can control to some degree.

I know that Christina's father was physically abusive at least towards her mom when she was growing up, b/c she is very open about it and talks about it at her concerts etc. Maybe it's a control thing for her. I do wish they'd make as big a deal about the celebs who have vaginal births though kwim? It sounds like all celebs opt for an elective cesarean, and I'm pretty sure that's not really the case. Heck, look at Pam Anderson and Demi Moore!

I agree.. we never know for sure.
And I think we are getting some great publicity for home births and natural birth with Ricki Lake and Gweyth Paltrow.

I just hate this obsession with stars though...and I am just as guilty. Why do we feel we need to even know their personal life, or their birth choices or whatever. Why are we so obsessed with brittney not wearing panties? I don't either lots of the time... no one cares. Why are we so obsessed with her bad parenting? There are millions of parents equally as bad.

Maybe my new years resolution will be to stop my own personal obsession with stars. Because I honestly do not give a damn about how they choose to birth or whatever the headline is. I guess by knowing stars are messed up makes me feel more at peace with my craziness.

I dunno.. LOL, it just all seems so silly.

Sadly, it will take something tragic happening to celebrity during one of these elected cesareans for people to remember and realize it ISN'T the 'easy' way out! I've never met a woman who had both vag and surgical birth and preferred the surgical way (as far as healing/recovering goes)

In totally Aggreance. But I know that personally the C-section thing being so high disturbs me too, hence the reason why I am so passionate about Doula and Midwifery.

Yes, I realize that some of these women have lifestyles that may not have been condusive for vaginal birth, by why the splashy headline?? I mean Charlotte Church had a homebirth and very few knew about it, why not give her the same cred. I think what distrubes me about it is the fact that she is opting (yes, we know not the whole story) to have the baby early. And that is exactly how it is written "her c-section was scheduled for the 10th of January, but Aguillera is choosing to have it sooner". I think big headlines like that make a statement louder than we can even shout about the dangers of surgical birth and the need to start believing in normal birth again. A doctor once said that he believes that vaginal birth will one day be obselete. That is a scary day.

The hollywood obsession and grip on the world is strong and I really think it would us well to know why they are making these choices. I was so proud of Christina's photo spread in Marie Clarie and now I am sadly shaking my head. But that's just me.

The louder they make the news, the more I think there is a cover up! Like the publicist is afraid that the "real story" will hit the news first, so they do a big press release, grant interviews, etc. so that they get to make the first impression. There's nothing to cover up when a woman has a home birth.

Unhappy Oh Christina

I find it depressing Yes, we don't really know without knowing her personally, but it is so true that in America, especially, Hollywood sets the trends, and the fact that they so frequently (it seems in the media at least) schedule ceseareans will not benefit girls / women- future birthers. They need to know a) the seriousness of this decision b) the fact that it is a decision that needs to be made with all information of benefits/risks known and weighed and c) it is more than OK to push, and allow a baby to come out the birth canal.
Note: I am aware of the emotional, psychological reasons why women would choose a c-section. I am definitely not advocating for taking that right away. I am just sad because when it makes news, and people see/ read about it they remember it and think it is no big deal. I would much rather see stories in mainstream media about women like Naomi Watts, Charlotte Church, Ricki Lake, Cindy Crawford etc
