On December 13th, our hospital shut down it's birthing unit forcing women to
leave the community, drive for an hour (an hour in good weather with no
cottage country traffic) to give birth. The option for birthing at home is
not an option for women who live too far from a hospital in our rural
community, with the closure of the unit there is no hospital for many women
within the thirty minute time allotment for the midwives to feel good about
offering this part of their service to mothers. The unit is still closed
and the Board is citing funding as the major issue. I have been involved
with this project since before it all hit the fan and can answer any
questions, off the lists, should you have any.
Busing is arranged for the Alliston residents, but if you are in, or near,
Toronto - we could REALLY use the support! Please come and join us as the
resolution for funding this essential service is presented at the
Legislative Assembly on 19 April.
