The Saturday Sitch
Anyone ever have to do one of those days where you have to go school and explain your job?
How do you explain being a doula to your own children or to other kids?

I haven't had to go to a school and explain it, but I've just told Keith that I go help other moms have their babies. He's fine with that explanation, but he's 5 lol.
BTW - what's Sitch mean?

Well when my dd was 5 (now 8) she told one of her friends that it was my job to bring the sperm to a birth! LOL I am not sure how she even knew that word. But I explained to her very calmly that I did not bring sperm. I helped women with having babies. That was about as complicated as I got it with her at that age.
So then my job became to bring the "big ball" LOL
She was with me at my home water birth last year though and now has a better understanding. I told her that she was MY doula and she thought that was very cool.

I've told kids before that I go to help mom to have her baby. Depending on the kids, I then elaborate a little by saying that I help to show dad some things that can help the mom, too, and I rub her neck and back and bring cool wash rags to place on her forehead and stuff. That always satisfies them. To actually speak to a classroom of kids at school, however... I'm not sure how to elaborate more without possibly giving too much information, kwim?

...that is mostly what I tell my daughters. they have books & watch birth videos with me all the time
I would LOVE to go to a school and talk in those "career days"!!! But I have no idea on where to start, what is appropriate (I would love to teach any/all ages), what to say, what NOT to say, use graphics, power point presentations...anybody has done it?
Anybody has any ideas that I could as guidance?
Thanks in advance

I did a grade 12 psycology presentation on midwives and doulas, and it led to birth. They were very into it.

Quote from my son...." When I grow up, my wife will have a Doula. Or two. Then she won't need to be scared when the babies come."
He reads my birth books, and we've had to caution him about talking about "what mommy does" at school- fourth grade is not a time to bring in the books showing photos of vaginal birth.......
