Smile CAPPA LD/CBE training

And I'm SO FREAKING NERVOUS!!!!!!!

Currently, this is me:

A friend and I are going to do our CAPPA LD/CBE training this summer (big huge colossal change of plans that came about this week). I've been looking over info, figuring out what expenses I have right now, looking for books, etc & etc. I just can't believe it's really happening!!!

I'm so excited for you!

I can understand that you're nervous (I've been there, done that), but really....once you get there and get started, you'll see that there's nothing to be nervous about! You'll FINALLY be surrounded by others as crazy about birth as you and will know that you belong!!

Thanks Ladies

I think what I'm mostly nervous about is all the preparation! I know I can do it, it's just thinking about it. kwim?

I printed out the PreWorkshop Study Guide today. As I sat there looking at it I felt so dumb. Thankfully as I went thru it, seeing how much I could do from memory, I got about 80% of it filled out. I just don't want to screw up.

Just take it one thing at a time; you're right...you can do it!

Well...80% correct right off the bat is good! For the rest, just use the resources available to you (your birth books, Internet, any midwife or nurse friends, your doula-sisters at alldoulas, etc.). You'll do fine!

I was SO overwhelmed with all of this stuff for DONA cert (along with work, school and trying to have a life) but I just made a list and checked them off one by one. Now, I'm only 1 birth away from being certified!

I wish I was going. I sure could use the boost in doula vibes. After my little guy got here I have lost my drive to be a doula. I guess I am just frustrated with lack of clients and tired from lack of sleep. Everyone probably gets that way after a new baby arrives, huh. Maybe next year they will hold it some place closer to me so I can attend. Have a good time for me.

Try not to be too frustrated over this. Maybe it's not the right "season" for doula-ing for you and that being with your little guy is what you're supposed to be focusing on? If I've said it once, I've said it thousand times....being a mom is THE MOST important job ever! There is no other job that could possibly be more important. If I'm correct about the "seasons", then it's possible that as your little guy grows, you'll start feeling that doula drive again. Whatever you do, it's OK! Take it one day at a time, and try not to fret about it. I'm not trying to discourage you from doula-ing if that is what you truly want to do, but what I'm trying to say is to simply go with what your heart is telling you.

Hi there Heather - I can definitely understand where you are coming from. My youngest has just turned 20 months and I am back at marketing my business actively. I have had births in the last year but they were very difficult on me, my son and my husband. Each one has gotten easier but as a mother, your thoughts and heart are often with the nursling at home when it should be on your client. Children are so small and dependant for such a short period of time. Before long, you will no longer be the centre of the universe and as your little one gains more independance, you may feel the doula bug once more. What really helped me was to remain connected to the doulas in the area who were actively taking clients so that I could hear the stories and share in their trials and triumphs. I also took that time to attend a CAPPA CBE training and work through the reading and the exam/essays (am still working on those!) CBE Classes are a little more easily schedulable than births so that has worked well for me. Sorry to ramble on - just wanted to give some encouragement. Being a doula is a very giving profession. If a doula is what you are meant to be, it will come back when you have some of your self available to give, kwim?

You can never get back what time you are away from your young one - don't wish the time away - it passes so quickly all by it's self! R

I know telling you probably wont make a huge difference but DONT BE NERVOUS! I didn't get the prep stuff before training because I signed up at the last minute so I obviously didn't do any of it. I had only read a couple of books as well. Once I got there I quickly realized it didn't matter. I don't feel like I missed out by not being as prepared etc. You will fit right in and the more experienced will welcome you as much as the least experienced. Its typically a wonderful community to belong to. Do what you can and don't stress over what you don't get done. If you knew it all before you got there why would you go?? lol Relax and enjoy it...you will love the experience (once you get there)

Christy ~ Did you do the CBE training too? From what the cappa site says, there are several things required before the training. I think I can make all the required classes and stuff. I'm hoping to find a weekend childbirth class instead of a weekly series.

I only did the doula training...are you certifying for both? I guess I just assumed you were just doing doula certification. oops! I am not sure what all CAPPA says you need to have done before the class but with the Lamaze CBE cert class I just attended it wasn't super important that you have it all done first. It was mostly about HOW to teach...it is up to you to learn what to teach. I assume CAPPA is similar in that the program is self study and the workshop is more about aspects of teaching. You don't want to go in clueless but if you have read at least one or two books from the list you should already have a decent knowledge base. Most of the other ladies at my weekend are already educators and I started clueless about how to even begin a course design. I never felt out of place or behind etc. I just want to encourage you to not worry that anyone will look at you like you dont belong if they are more seasoned. It doesn't seem that this profession works that way. At least not that I have seen yet.
