First Birth-Adrenaline Rush

Yesterday, my client went into labour at 4 a.m., but called me at 8a.m. We laboured at her house together for 6 hours, and then I called the midwife and she said bring her in. Finally at 10:21 p.m. the baby was born beautiful, healthy and very content. It was wonderful. When I finally left the hospital at midnight, I felt very satisfied that I had finally found what I wanted to do for a career.

My only complaint is, when she called at 8a.m. I got a huge adrenaline rush that pretty much lasted until I got home at midnight. Now, I feel really tired and kind of shaky. Not the greatest of feelings, but worth it. Will this happen every time?

Yep.....if it wasn't for that adrenaline rush...I don't think many of us could successfully doula! Feeling totally exhausted afterwards (even for a few days afterwards sometimes) is totally normal, too. Welcome to Doula-hood!

Congratulations on your first birth!! It sounds like it was a great one! You will never, ever forget it!

Yeah I had it on both my births ,exactly the other 3 births I'v witnessed as well, but not as a doula. The last time I doulad it is a 32 hr labor with 3 extra postpartum hrs in hospital,so it was a good thing that I had that rush When It was all said & done I had someone pick me up & while waiting in the lobby I fell asleep Hey what can I say it was a long couple of days.

By the way I have a confession to make on that birth.I am a health nut,but during that labor I made 3 trips to the cafetry & I had a sandwich once, but the big thing was I had 2 8oz ice creams COVERED in sprinkles.& I had two m&m candy packets from the machines ,a soda ,a donut & a popsicle Let's just say I REALLY blew my healthy diet out of the water.& my client never stops making fun of me (we keep in touch)

Anyhow I got of track a BIG CONGRATS! & s Get some rest
