Info on VBAC?

So here I am a newer Doula and I get an e-mail from a woman who is looking to have a VBAC. I am confident that with the right knowledge I can support her well. I have an appointment with her next week on thursday and I would really like to have more information on the following:

pre-eclampsia (what it is, is there anything to help not get it a second time around?)

sensitization to the Kell antigen ( what is this?)

I was also thinking about telling her of the ICAN meetings locally to see what this is about.

I just really want to go into this meeting more knowledgable than I am right now. Is there anything she can do at this point to create a more positive outcome or is it all really out of her control?

any information is helpful and appreciated.

Hey, Cortney!

I just had a consult with a woman going for VBAC as well. I don't know a whole lot about VBACs but am learning more everyday. I've joined the Florida ICAN yahoogroup and visit and read VBAC.com whenever I can. Since this consult I've also gone through all of my books and looked up VBAC in the index to see what it says (surprisingly, I have the ACOG Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth (or something like that) and it's very supportive of VBACs and tells you what to ask your doctor. Although some of the information I personally don't agree with in this book, I think it's a GREAT tool and every pregnant woman with an OB should have one because they are affiliated with this organization and it has GREAT questions to ask these docs...FROM ACOG!) Anywho..that all aside, I just wanted to wish you luck with this as I am in the same boat. This woman chose to hire another doula (which is AWESOME, I want this so badly for her after hearing her story...) but I'm glad to have met her and her family because I know how important it is to educate myself on this important topic and I know one day I'll help a Mama have a successful VBAC.

Good luck!

I've been reading the messages for some time to get as much info that I can.. but I wanted to comment on the pre-eclampsia question. I had it with my second child (different father). My mother-in-law had severe PIH with all 3 of her children, so I should have been prepared, but it was still a shock!
I went to my 30 week prenatal and my rings started getting really tight and we had to use KY to get them off! Then they had to take my shoes and socks off b/c they were cutting off circulation! (Quick note that I think is very relevant.. I had been put on bed rest for 6 days until this appt b/c of preterm contractions that I thought were just b-h's) They took my b/p and it was almost 40 numbers higher for both #s. So, I was on bedrest for the duration of the pregnancy. The only times I could get up was to poop/shower/and go to the mw 2times a week and get monitored 1 time a week. It apparently is very serious! They induced me @ 38 1/2 weeks and 2 minutes after my placenta was birthed, my b/p was right where it was before I was pregnant.
Sorry this was so long! I hope that helps.. if you need more info, just ask!

Pre eclampsia can be totally avoided by women who get 80 grams of protien a day and salt food to taste. It is more common in first time mothers or second time mothers with a different father from the first baby. It has to do with the male sperm and your body "getting used to it". Good luck.

you know, on the midwiferytoday.com forums there was a woman on there whom had pre-e and she said that she tried the DR. Brewer diet and she said it didn't work for her at all.

Has this worked for any of your clients before, or anyone you know?
