Well, AAMI isn't exactly to be certified. I'm assuming you are talking about midwifery education though. I am going through them for my book education and still thinking on what I will do for my hands on. Remember that with any program you still have to take the NARM for certification. AAMI (and any other program) only gets you prepared if you choose to certify. Any certificate you receive only says you completed the program not certification.

Oh exactly, I knew the NARM testing is required with any course you take, I'm just trying to get the best program possible, kwim? What made you choose AAMI ??? There is another website that is offering a midwifery course much cheaper but wondering WHY it is so much cheaper then AAMI..

Will AAMI help you find a midwife to help with the hands on, or will that basically be all up to you?

I chose AAMI because it was the most indepth course I could find. I also knew lots of people enrolled and they said it was tough. Tough is what I want because I want to make sure I know my stuff.

I can tell you that Carla has recently went up on tuition because she had to. There were some regulation issues and she had no choice. But she tries to keep it as affordable as possible because it is so important to her. Carla is also usually very accessible to her students/possible students. I have personally spoken with her more than once and simply love her philosophy on birth and midwifery. She has had lots of personal stuff this year and isn't around as much, but she has left someone covering for her and she is great about getting back with people.

Hmmm. Did I answer your question? I love love love AAMI and am so glad I chose them for my education. It's hard and it'll take quite a while. But it is very very thorough and I expect not to know it all, but to know how to find it all when I'm done. Carla also offers payment plans and pretty significant discounts if you pay all at once. I can tell you with all honestly that I believe the AAMI course is worth so much more than you pay for it. I'd pay four times that if I had to.

Feel free to ask any questions you want about it. I'll answer what I can and try to find answers for anything I can't!

So what do you think about the other website listed on the other thread?? I'm just confused on which to go with, the other is SO cheap its almost too good to be true, kwim? Then again thats something I know I can afford, AAMI, I'm not sure I can swing that plus books and all..

You didnt answer my Q about AAMI finding someone for you to do an apprenticeship with.

How far are you into it? How many years are they saying it will take until you are done with the book work? Was everything sent to you all at once, or do they do it by units like the other program?

Sorry for all the Q's! I'm just SO excited! LOL

Candi ~ Did you start out in the advanced studies or did you take the intro class first?

I went straight to the Advanced Studies. First you receive an Orientation Packet. You complete it, which is basically getting your organized to do the studies. Then once you return it you get a binder that contains the course. It is divided into six sections and you receive all of them together. You decide when and in what order to work on what. Sections can be turned in all at once or broken up into smaller portions, whichever works for you. I love having everything now instead of having to do whatever they send me to get another section. I need to jump around to stay motivated and interested.

Sorry about skipping the apprenticeship question! I do believe they will work to help you find an apprenticeship. Of course, they can't secure one for you, but I do believe thay do what they can to help.

I know what you mean about the too good to be true thing. I must admit I'd be worried about that too. All I can say is that Carla will work with you on cost. I'm not sure of her payment plans now, but I signed up just before she raised tuition. I got a scholarship (not sure if she still does those), had a discount from a workshop, and got on a payment plan. ($100/mo) Yes I'm paying her little by little for a long time but it is so worth it to me.

the website is ancientartmidwifery.com. No, you don't need anything but a few books to get started. I personally chose to take two semesters at our communty college since that was all I needed to complete my Associates Degree and I was able to use A & P and Med. Terminology towards portions of AAMI. Those portions also have alternative ways of being completed though besides college courses.

I'll chime in on this one. I'm also an AAMI student and have been since Nov of 05. I think the course is extremely detailed and thorough. I chose this course, too, because the people I talked with said it was tough. I love challenges.

Now, I am not in the advanced course...I'm taking the Intro to Midwifery, which leaves me wondering how much more thorough will the advanced course be, lol. I really enjoy it.

I'm not sure I will stay with AAMI for advanced studies as I really would like to attend Birthingway in Oregon. But, if I'm still in LA when the time comes, I probably would as I like the course and the school. And, they do offer skills workshops in many states, I'm just not sure which states in particular.

AAMI is like any other program, you still have to take the NARM to be certified. That makes you a CPM. Practicing without certification makes you a lay midwife or direct entry midwife, which is good too but illegal in some states. Well, nowadays most states.

Heidi, the skills workshops are held around the country whereever there is interest and someone to host them. I am hoping to do this in a couple of years here in the south as I was lucky enough to attend one last October and DEFINITELY want to do it again as well as give others the opportunity!

Candi,

Let me know when you're ready to host one. If I'm still in the south, I'll help you out.

I took a look at the intro course. When I decide it is the time to start my training, I think I might take the intro course. I am glad you are enjoying it!
