Would this work? Video exchange?

Ok, this is a very raw thought. I have this idea about making copies of videos/DVDs I have to share as previews with others who can share some with me. I hate the idea of buying a resource without having seen it first. The intent would not be to keep the copy, have the person make a copy, or anything else that violates copyright laws -- it would only be to swap and view to better be able to make a decision if this would be a resource a doula would want to add to her collection.

Is this do-able? Or too complicated?

Did you ever work this out, Stacie?

I am considering doing this with the videos in my lending library so clients can preview them before checking something out. Since I have a DVD drive on my computer, I imagine this might be something I can do. When I get my website up and running again, I will add the previews to a clients-only online area...

Now that I think about it, though, it probably goes against laws to re-edit the material and show even a preview of it. Does anyone know for sure?

I have been wondering for a long time when companies will start making previews available at the store by scanning the barcode under a machine (the same way you can listen to music samples).

That would be VERY neat!

I'm pretty sure ANY copying is illegal. But if they are Injoy videos, many of those have preview clips available on their web site now.
www.injoyvideos.com (I think)

Copying a video, dvd or music for your personal use is perfectly legal. Birth videos especially are so soo expensive and I have been very hesitant to purchase videos that I have not seen a preview of because of the cost involved. I think it is a great idea.

naturalcuriosity, please site a source on that. Because my brother is an attorney and tells me it is a copyright violation to make ANY copies of DVDs.

I found an older (2001) NY Times article which says

Quote:
That is where the double bind comes in. Actually making such copies for personal use is not illegal. But it is against the law to break through the copy-protection measure to make the legal copies.
The whole article is here. I don't know if things have changed since 2001 though.
