Logos are very frustrating and honestly, unless you are a professional designer or extremely handy with Photoshop/Illustrator, you will waste so much time and energy on it that it is NOT worth it to do it yourself. Also, to be completely honest, most homemade logos don't look that great and reflect poorly on your business. Having a fantastic logo is such an integral part of your marketing you want to get it exactly right from the start!

I would HIGHLY recommend posting your logo project at elance.com It is a website where professional freelance designers bid/compete for projects. It is free to post your project and there is no obligation to choose a designer if you don't like any of them. Even though I am a designer I have a horrific time designing things for myself so I posted my logo project on elance.com and two weeks later I had an awesome logo for only $140 (usually that would cost you about $300!).

A question for those of you who have hired someone else to design your logo- how does this process work? Do you have to have a solid idea of what you want in order for that person to design it? Or are designers willing and able to come up with prototypes using their own creativity? I'm just boggled by how to hire someone to design a logo when even *I* don't know what it should look like, kwim?

I'm in the same boat with a logo. I can't afford to spend a ton of money on one, but I want one, KWIM? I found something I like online, but its $50 and I don't know if its worth the money since I am BROKE lol.

What about finding someone just starting out with design? Maybe they would have cheaper fees? How would I find someone?

I just made a new thread about what my logo design process was like: Elance.com 101 - How to get an inexpensive custom logo!
Hope that helps!

For my logo, I had my sister draw it She knows me and what I do and fashioned it off of myself wearing my son I kind of told her what I was looking for, but not too specific and she sketched it for me. Then I cleaned it up and added text/font to it. Do you have something in mind??

What if you got some ideas of the general direction you want to go in online from google and other doula sites, and then call a local t-shirt company where you live and see if they would do your design and give you the electronic file. My bestfriend works for a screen printing company and along with designign shirts and banners, they do a lot of logo work, too, and I know they only charge $20-$25 for an entire shirt design INCLUDING a logo, so somewhere near you may be willing to give you that price for just a logo design and no shirt...unless you want a shirt! Just a thought!

Bartering often works. I am a logo designer and do a lot of work for work at home parents and often barter/exchange services.

Maybe this could be an option for you?
