I was wondering, what is your client load? What did you start out with, and what is the max amount of clients you can comfortably take on a month (either with or without a back up)?
I take as many as my schedule can handle. Sometimes that is 1 and other times that is 4. I can only take more than 2, if I have reliable back-up. You need to take s many as you are comfortable taking. I thought it was 1-2 a month, but finances also play a big part.

well technically I have none right now, but I intend on having 1-2 a month. I have a young daughter (almost 11 months!) and don't want to put her in a situation where I am gone a lot yet.
I have done four in a month, 1 to 2 is comfortable with a toddler and also working part time. If I was single with no kids and no other job, my goal would be 5-8 per month.

wowzers! wouldn't that be nice?
I just realized you are just up the 'street' from me! Howdy neighbor!
Because I run other programs out of our Centre and I stay at home with my 2 dds one a month or even one every other month is my ideal. I dont' see myself going beyond 2-3 for a lot of reasons - family balance, my own health and sanity, client needs, other birth related work.

As I am going into a mat. leave, this has changed slightly, but I was taking four births a month (with backup) and finding that between postnatal visits (I do three which is higher than some) and meeting prospective clients, that was enough for me! I've tried 5 and it was barely manageable - if you have a month where they all go into labor together and one or two are long ones (speaking from experience...), well, let's just say I felt that my phone was ringing every time I fell asleep for about ten days. Now I'm doing one last birth and that's it for a while...I miss those four-a-month days!

I've been doing about 2.5 per month (it averages out that way). I have 3 kids (12, 5 and 3) and I don't know if I could handle doing more. I dont' know if THEY could handle me doing more. I've been thinking if I were teaching classes or doing something else that was scheduled it might not be so bad, but I love that my appts. are all in the evening (few on the weekend) and being on call works for me. SO FAR! That being said, I am taking the majority of July and all of August off.

January to May '07= 16 births (two still pending, 14 done) so I guess that averages out to three a month? If only it were as evenly spaced as that... but it never is... I have done three in a week more than once this year already. Eeek!
Two a month is most comfortable for me, but I can do three. Well, and I have done four and five too, but I think I want to consider myself "fully booked" at two or three. (I have said this before... but I end up taking on the clients I feel drawn to take, even when it puts me over my quota.)
I'm still trying to figure out how many I can "reasonably" do, in addition to teaching CBE, working admin one day a week at a birth center, and keeping up with legal transcription too. And I have three kids. Juggle, juggle... searching for balance!
