Help - Stock photos

I have just visited a couple of stock photo sites to purchase some pics for my website I'm currently designing. I have just gone to purchase some, but then it gives me choices of what resolution to buy. What would be the best size to download? e.g

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 width=410><TBODY><TR class=f><TD>558 x 860 pixels
(7.8" x 11.9" 72dpi)

</TD><TD class=s></TD><TD></TD><TD class=s></TD><TD class=c></TD></TR><TR class=w><TD class=c></TD><TD class=s>

</TD><TD>1116 x 1721 pixels
(3.7" x 5.7" @ 300dpi)

</TD><TD class=s>

</TD><TD>

</TD><TD class=s>

</TD><TD class=c>

</TD></TR><TR class=g><TD class=c>

</TD><TD class=s>

</TD><TD>1674 x 2581 pixels
(5.6" x 8.6" @ 300dpi)

</TD><TD class=s>

</TD><TD>

</TD><TD class=s>

</TD><TD class=c>

</TD></TR><TR class=w><TD class=c>

</TD><TD class=s>

</TD><TD>2640 x 4072 pixels
(8.8" x 13.6" @ 300dpi)

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

It all depends on how big you want the picture on your screen. If you think about the average computer screen 1116x1721 is usually pretty good. I would go with one of the 300dpi ones and not the 72 dpi if the price is not that drastically more.

If you are only using it for your website than the 72dpi will be more than big enough. You generally shouldn't use 300dpi on websites because they are HUGE and take forever to download. However, if you would like to eventually use the picture in print such as a brochure, then you need to get the larger sizes and then resize them for your website.

Thanks Emily. I'm having a whale of a time on the Stockxpert website. I've saved some lovely pics in my light box and I'm about to download now.

Thanks

As a web designer I would have my clients send me photos in the below size or the next one up.

1116 x 1721 pixels

(3.7" x 5.7" @ 300dpi)

I always resize them so they don't take forever to load on the pages but they almost ALWAYS want brochures or business cards or other things with these photos so I like the larger ones. IF you can't resize them, get the small one. Good luck!

Thanks Elizabeth.

I did download the 72 dpi, but I have also downloaded a couple of the 300 dpi so I can use on brochures and business cards. I'll go to vista print for these as I have used them before and found them economical.

I'll post my website as soon as I've finished it. I know that there are some people that may 'right click and save' other people's photos without asking permission, but when you can purchase photos at a cost of pennies ($1 = 50p sterling) why do people have to steal?

Last night, I emailed Penny Simkin to ask permission to use her article 'Myths about Dads and Doulas' on my site. I have seen the article on many Doual websites and obviously they have acknowleged Penny as the author of the article, but this is the first time that I have wanted to use someone elses work in such a public way. I want to do everything properly and above board.

The only thing I'm stuck on now is a tag line for my business and also a logo. I did downlaod a pic off the stockxpert site to use in my header, but not too sure if it will work. It has pink and blue tones with some lilac butterflies and flowers in the background and then in the foreground there is a sillohette of a pregnant woman to the left. The background just seemed so tranquil and with the sillohette also, it just seems to get the message across, but not sure now.

The business name I have chosen is Tranquil Doula Services. I have done a massive web search and can't find a similar name apart from Tranquility Birth Services/ Tranquil Birth Services. But there is a genuine reason behind why I have chosen this business name. I previously qualified as Beautician and Complementary Therapist in 2002 and when I opened my beauty business in 2003 I called it Tranquil Beauty. I decided on the name after looking at the services I was wanting to offer and also at the way I wanted my treatment rooms to portray a tranquil ambiance.

I have also chosen to use this name because in the near future I hope to achieve a qualification in birth yoga, etc so feel that this name is suitable for what I'm hoping to achieve.

With regards to the logo, I had wanted a photograph of a pregnant women in the lotus postion, but during my web search I noticed that one of our alldoula sister's already has a similar logo, so this is off my list. I need something to portray 'tranquility' but also at the same time portraying pregnanayc/birth.

Any ideas?

Shelley,

You are doing amazing. Just follow your intuition. You can't go wrong with that! I am sure Penny will give you permission to use it. The other thing is. ALOT of times she posts stuff on her site for all of us to use. At the last DONA conference, she told us she was going to post some stuff and it was free for all of us to use, so that might be why you see it everywhere. Might have been just one of those free things. There might be a disclaimer on her site too saying they can be used. Penny is amazing!

I like the name. I think I have seen it before but it could just be you on
Hehehehe

Thanks Elizabeth.

Going off the subject a little, when you add additional forms to your Doula Business Forms disc, could you please let me know. The disc I bought from you is fantastic.

Shelley,

Certainly! I think I have a few more to add. I am going over them this week just to make sure they aren't outdated. Thanks for the feedback. I have the list of everyone that purchased and their emails so when I do update, everyone should get the update.
