Oh NO!! that is just...that makes me mad!
these doctors just want to get a the baby out of the way!! THAT'S IT!
same thing happened to me I was induced, dilated to 1cm, and that's it! had to have a c-sec. of course, I didn't know nothing about doulas...
but now all I have to say for my next preg. is VBAC!

That really stinks, but mom does have a choice and can switch doctors especially if she knows this now.

Don't show up for the induction. Plain and simple.
Care providers cannot legally force you into any medical procedure.
Performing interventions against your consent can be legal grounds to charge your care provider with assault and battery.
Care providers cannot drop a pregnant patient from care without 30 days notice and without referring you to another specific care provider (plenty of time for her to go into labour on her own).
Michelle is right, she can switch doctors at any time (even while labouring she can request a different care provider).
I hope she doesn't get induced, and that she is able to have the birth she wants and needs for this baby.
Sending positive birthing vibes and energy.

Ditto.
It makes me so mad too... 39 weeks? That isn't even term, right? My last client they broke her water to see the meconium and the doctor was like, "we need to because you are sooo overdue." She was 41 weeks and 3 days. Thats not overdue, its normal.

I say look for studies/articles etc talking not about dangers of induction but about what is really considered overdue. I think even ACOG even says PAST 42 weeks and some argue past 43 weeks. So, find her some information to read to help her feel confident in her argument. I think this might make her feel more empowered to make a tough decision like switching care providers etc. At the very least it might give her confidence to not show up for an induction. Arm her info that helps her instead of info against inductions that scares her. Well, actually both lol. Good luck with this. One of these days one of us will find a fool proof way to give these mamas the strength and confidence to do what they know is best!!! Anyone figured this out yet???It'd be worth millions! lol

I forgot to add something important: you should go over her Bishop Score with her.
In fact, when the doctor brings up induction again, have her ask what her Bishop Score is. That should immediately convey to her OB that she is only interested in evidence-based suggestions and not "policy".
Is being bullied into induction through scrae tactics and the numerous medical intervetions that will follow as a direct result of an unnecessary induction also "policy"? Grrr!
**Bishop Score information can also be found here (scroll down) and here (pdf).
Also, an online interactive questionnaire to see if you are ready for induction.

Yes, doctor's use the Bishop Score point scale.
I believe they also now have a fetal fibronectin test (by taking swabs of vaginal fluids) that can determine whether your induction may be successful (which is something I find fascinating and had done some research not too long ago to see if they could link the same signs they see in pregnant animals and whether they are also exhibited in pregnant women).

They might have these resources, but do they actually use them is the question?

In my case, with my doctor, he's been my OB for over 15yrs. done all my laporascopies, knows everything.. he's a very good doctor, and they have good midwives (I think) i just haven't gone back since being a doula..
I don't want to shock myself...

Ofcourse not. Anything that costs time, money or both is immediately written off. LOL!

Bishop Score card
I didn't check out Aussie's links but check here for a Bishop Score Card (from Best Doulas) that prints four wallet sized cards per page. I keep extra copies in my binder so mamas can take one and put it in her purse.
And I think the reason you weren't aware doctors used the Bishop Score, Jess, is because they don't think mamas know anything about it. When my first client had a NST she asked the doctor what her score was. The doctor looked shocked and asked her demeaning questions like "oh, can you name the 5 things we check for" etc. It was nice that she (client) did know them all from the top of her head!! So there!
