Medical Terminolgy -2
Ok I have learned a LOT about medical words all ready & I was thinking...Now I know some of you will laugh, some will say hey why not ,& the rest say who cares! But I was really thinking about this. (Cathy will know what I mean by this )
For someone who specializes in a field they have an "ist" at the end of there field name like " biologist" meaning: someone who specializes in the field of life.
So why don't doulas? I mean we specialize in helping women through labor or birth. Shouldn't we get the same title respect others in the medical field get?
Maybe doulaist,or birthists,or how about laborists....... I think I am getting carried away ok Tashina time for bed
So what do you think? Does it matter?

It's too early in the morning for me to formulate any kind of tactful response, so how about for now just:
Ummm... no.

Ha ha ha. I love it!! Lol When I was studying that book I would make up all kinds of crazy words. I do like 'laborist' although I'm sure we'd get more weird looks than with 'doula' since 'laborist' sounds like 'lobbyist' or a labor worker.

Honestly I do not want to be categorized in the same category as the medical field. I am not catering to the medical field, but catering to the mother and her needs.
I could share more, but am supposed to be getting ready for a potential birth LOL

You know I was thinking your right were different from a dr and such & I do really like the word DOULA,so its not that I have a problem with it,I was just thinking about it a little to much.
Michelle you are a Massage Therap"ist" aren't you? Is that considered in the medical field?

The title of "Laborist" is already taken...
There is actually already a title of "laborist". It's kind of a new thing, and a few hospitals have them now, although I've never attended a hospital that's had them. It's something that I do not like at all! Laborists are OBs who work only at the hospital, as hospital employees, and don't see women before they go into labor. They strictly see women in labor. The plan is that women would see their own OBs for prenatals, but when she goes into labor and heads for the hospital, she would get a Laborist who happens to be already there on duty. It's shift work, so Laborists come and go much like nurses.
You can read more about them here:
Contemporary OB/GYN -- Enter the Laborist
Personally.....I REALLY like "Doula"; it has history, and it really means something.

Well, I am not a massage therapist yet, but when I am finished yes I will be within the medical field for that area of my life.
I know you are probably going to ask me something like how is it different being involved in the medical field for that and not doula work and for me it is two different fields. I choose to be considered within the medical field for massage therapy, but not for birth work.

Oh no, no ,no I wasn't attacking you nor was I thinking of doing so,I was just wondering if you would be considered in the medical field as a Massage Therapist. I assumed yes because of the ist,I was just thinking again.
Can you tell my mind wonders a bit to much sometimes

Oh I like Doula too,I just didn't explain myself good enough & my brain was lacking power :l ,its not that I don't I just think that the medical field underestimates our ability & thought that maybe that was one reason we don't get the ist on the end,but now I am going to be one of thise who says "who cares!" OL I like Doula & thats what will be
As for the laborists that makes me sick to my stomach,oh how much more will they do in the birthing area of life ?

Don't worry I didn't think you were attacking - just wanted to answer the question that I have had asked of me before. Sometimes people don't understand why I wouldn't want to be considered in the medical field for doula work but it was okay for being a massage therapise

Lori, I had forgotten about that article. I have read it before. When I read laborist I knew it sounded familiar but couldn't place why...thanks for the reminder (not that it was pleasant!)
