Even with a waiver signed, you would need to check with your insurance to see if everyone is covered in case of an accident. You'll need to find out specifically how your insurance deals with transporting clients.

Wink I agree with your dh

I would like to share a post I made shortly after a car accident I was in this past June. Someone was asking about driving clients (in this case it was Pp clients, but it would count for birth clients as well, IMO).

What do/don't you do? Post #17

Yeah....but I only posted a link to my post! Aussie has been VERY helpful with her speed and efficiency of posting links. I've been incredibly busy for the past week or so, and she doesn't know how very helpful she's been to me lately! you Aussie!!!

I know, I'll never live it down, I've brought shame to my AllDoulas family! LOL!

It's a trade-off... posting links so no-one notices how often I tend to wander off-topic, LOL!

Thanks for your input.

No way, no how would I EVER transport clients. Even with a waiver they can still sue you and it is important to know that most insurance companies will not cover you in the event you have an accident with a client in the car.

I specifically recall at doula-training that we are not to do transport! I took it as, it is not within our scope of practice. Maybe it was just her strong opinion, but she said "Do Not transport, follow behind them to the hospital, call a taxi, or an ambulance." You may be liable if something happened, not to mention how you would feel. My mantra ~ better safe than sorry.

Maybe a taxi isn't a bad idea, if you have access to one - that way you can still sit in the back with her, and help her during the drive! Maybe she has another friend/family member/neighbor who can drive, while you ride with her?? You can just tell her that it is out of your scope of practice to drive her...

I had one client who asked if I could help drive her to the hospital b/c her dh might be able to. I explained that even if someone plowed into me and it wasn't my fault, she could still sue me so I really wasn't comfortable with it. She made arrangements with a neighbor to drive her if necessary. I was up front and told her if forced into the situation, I would have to call the squad.

I would absolutly not transport clients. #1>> I don't drive. And for #2>> I used to work in the insurance biz before I became a Doula, I know it just isn't worth the risk. Most poilicies only have a million dollar liability, so if you are in a bad accident and they all get injured they could possibily sue you for up to 3million dollars!!! Mom, babe and Dad. I would take a taxi instead, but even then I am often nervous. Dad needs to get his act together and drive or yes, put it in the hands of a neighbour or family and then follow them or meet them at the hospital. My 2cents.
