puzzling symptoms

mama is due feb 1. she's been having bad back pain, doc prescribed a belly band but she finds it painful. she's been seeing a chiropractor and that is helping somewhat. possibly unrelated, today she called me w/ pains in lower abdomin, very intense, said she couldn't really get into her car and sit after working (she's a teacher). she said the pain was steady, did not come and go, no peaks. pain made her feel like she has to pee, feels a little better after she pees. after talking about lots of possibilities she went to l & d to get checked out. no uti, baby looks great, ctx picking up on monitor - the doc thought the pain was ctx. she's dilated to 1 cm. doc thinks baby is pressing on bladder. later in evening pain let up a bit, but a lot of cramping.

could this be a positional issue w/ baby? it didn't really make sense to me that she was feeling ctx pain as steady w/ no breaks. she's seeing her OB tomorrow for reg. appt. maybe she can shed more light.

When my (now gone) cyst torsed in my last pregnancy, I felt pretty unbearable back pain (which got progressively worse as the days went by, almost going away at night in the beginning) more dominantly on one side. It also kicked me into labor, although the pain I felt was constant and I didn't distinguish between it and the contractions until it was pointed out that I was having contractions in L&D. Typically, they would have known if she had a cyst from an early ultrasound (mine "disappeared" behind baby at about 12 weeks), but there was no way of knowing what had happened with me until they finally did a CT scan.

All that said, they also checked my gallbladder and kidneys (via U/S) in the days before the CT scan, thinking there might be an infection or a stone passing or something along those lines (although I had no history of either nor did I have a family history).

Sometimes a transverse position can cause some funky pain, especially this late in the pregnancy... any chance it's that?

that is really interesting maggie. and ouch, i'm sorry you had all that pain. did the cyst affect your labor? did you deliver vaginally? i'm guessing you are happy it's gone w/ another little one on the way (!!!!!!)

the last time we met, in late dec. the baby was head down and we were guessing from belly mapping OA, but who knows.

Nope - they took both the cyst and my son out at the same time (at 34 weeks), so a VBAC I will be doing this time! I lost the ovary that it was on, too, but hey - at least I never have to worry about it coming back! :o)

Probably not positional then, but she might have her gallbladder and kidneys checked if it persists or gets worse...I'm sure there are other things, too - those are just the things that I remember having checked. She may just be dealing with the normal backaches of late pregnancy, too, though - larger breasts and whatnot? ;o)

could be bladder, still, even fungus, which wouldn't show as a uti. or spastic uriter (don't know if i'm spelling that right). Or just pressure. I'm REAL helpful!

hope she feels better soon, whatever it is. if they find the cause, clue us in, too!

really simple question but... do you think she could be persistently dehydrated? moms who drink a lot of soda, tea, coffee or other drinks that are not water can think they are drinking enough liquids but really they are chronically dehydrated and their sensitive and overstressd kidneys are freaking out.

My guess would be pubic sympysis diastasis. It's where ligament that joins the pubic bones in front becomes too loose and unstable. It can be debilitating. I know someone who was in a wheelchair the last weeks of her pregnancy because of it. Chiropractic can help somewhat, but there is no really good treatment afaik.

Raeben,

That's what I was thinking as I read the symptoms. At least there is an easy way to find out - up your non-caffeinated fluid intake!

raeben, i was wondering this last night. i will bring that up w/ her. she is a teacher and i know it can be hard for her to meet her needs in her classroom (bathroom breaks, snacks, water)

pambell, this was something i thought of when she called. i explained it as well as i could so i'm sure she asked when she went to l & d. maybe they would not be great at diagnosis. my last client that had it couldn't spread her legs w/o pain. this mom isn't complaining of that, and she is already seeing the chiro. seems like maybe he would have caught. i dunno. i do remember i found something helpful for it - using a rebozo to bind the hips - i think it was on midwifery today web site???? it was supposed to be super effective. i only found it after my previous client birthed, so didn't have a chance to find it.

i've been searching and can't find it now. but what i remember is basically, just really tight (to the mom's comfort) hip binding w/ a rebozo which will change the pressure in the pelvis and relieve the pain in the pubic area. according to the article it worked.

Great tip thanks! That does make sense that that would work. As far as l&d knowing much about this, I wouldn't hold my breath, yk? I don't know that a chiro would be able to "pick it up" by feel per se, especially if she wasn't having symptoms before. It's really just an exaggeration of the normal "looseness" that occurs during pregnancy, so I would think it's not so easy to say what's normal and what's not in that area unless there is pain. Good luck to you client!

I'm interested in finding out what's going on with your client. I had the same pain when I was pregnant with my daughter. She dropped really early and I was 2cm at 29 weeks. I felt pain standing or sitting. I had a couple of episodes of preterm labor. Fortunately, they were able to stop the contractions and I delivered at 39 weeks. Please keep us posted.

no, a good icpa chiro should easily be able to figure out if it is pubic symphysis issues or something else. my chriro was able to figure it out in less than a minute and i felt a lot of relief after just one treatment. i think i ended up getting one or two more adjustments as needed and felt like it really put me back together.

bella, here is a pretty good info page about pubic symphysis pain
