Hypnobabies Hypno-Doula
Hi ladies!
Have any of you done the Hypnobabies Hypno-doula study set? I always wanted to do hypnobabies during my pregnancy but always got out bided on ebay. I'm looking into getting this set so I can further enrich my services as a doula. Do you think it's worth while or a waste of money?
I'm also looking to get 2 copies of the Hynobabies sets to "rent out" to clients for a nominal fee.

I have the Hypnobabies Doula course. It's not as expensive as the parents course. I believe it was around $50. I like it, have used it several times. I don't think I'd buy and rent it out though.

I have it - I got it when I had a HypnoBabies client. It's definitely valuable if you have clients who do HypnoBabies, although I honestly thought the workbook was a bit confusing - it went a lot into self-hypnosis for birth in general even when it doesn't apply to Hypnobabies (and pointed out that you should not do certain things that you would from other classes). Good in theory, but for me (who has never done the course or anything), I found it a bit too confusing.

i do have the doula set and am working through their "certification" work book. I used hypnobabies w/my second son and thought it was very helpful.
Do they allow you to buy the homestudy course and rent it out?

I have no idea what Hypnobabies "allows". I just know it was hard for me to get a copy during my pregnancy and I'd love to have a 2 copies available to those clients interested.
How are you liking the hypno-doula course?

The course is really just reading through a manual - so its fine - but repeat info for me as I did the homestudy. The CDs that come with are a nice touch.
As for difficult to get, you can buy the homestudy course, and the hypnodoula program on their own website anytime (hypnobabies.com) - and if you sign up for their mailing list, they send out 20% off coupons often - so it shouldn't be hard for your mama's to buy it if they wish...
You may want to look into "copyright" type issues before commiting to buying one and renting it - I just would worry for you that there would be some potential legal issues, if you didn't have an agreement w/Hypnobabies to use the copies as such.

I took the HypnoDoula workshop. I found it helpful although most of it was stuff I already knew since I had taken HypnoBabies classes when I was pregnant with my 2 year old. I don't know if this would come with it but my teacher also had sample scripts to use with women that were doing hypnosis but not HypnoBabies and she covered some of the differences in the different programs. The workshop didn't come with the CD's ~ I think those would be helpful to have to loan out to mom's.
The other thing that I found helpful with mom's using hypnosis was the free course from http://www.hypnosis.edu/distance/
It covers the theory of hypnosis as well as the "how to" of hypnotizing people and different methods for people that may have difficulty with the traditional visualization/relaxation methods.

I've done a hypno-doula training (I'm a Hypnobabies instructor) and the doulas who attended said it was worth while. Clients using hypnosis do need special support and this can help you to understand why they are doing what they are doing... it can also make you more appealing to clients using hypnosis, over a doula who didn't have the training. If you complete the certification pack, Hypnobabies will list you on their website, so homestudy moms will be able to find you, too.

You should definitely talk with Kerry at Hypnobabies about this. I think there might be a legal issue because the materials are copyrighted.

I think its very worthwhile to become certified as a Hypno-Doula. I guess you could probably tell that from my handle, huh? I get calls all the time from Hypnobabies Home Study students who are looking specifically for a doula who is trained in and experienced with the method to attend their birth. Attending births with moms using hypnosis does require a working understanding of hypnosis in general and hypnosis for birth in specific. It also requires just a little bit different skill set.
I agree with the pp's about the buying and renting of the sets though, that might cross some copyrighting laws or something. You can call Hypnobabies directly at 714-952-2229 and I'm sure Kerry would be happy to discuss it with you.
I think you'll be very happy learning how to work with hypnosis moms! I attend Hypnobabies, HypnoBirthing, and "traditional" births and I'm telling ya, the Hypnobabies births are by FAR the easier births to be doula at! Have fun with it!

Hypnobabies HypnoDoula
In serving over 700 families at birth and now many more using hypnosis, the Doula workbook is so important. It took me several hypnosis births to get into the skill and swing of hypnosis skilled Doula care (ok, meaning I was much more physical as a Doula, as a HypnoDoula I am much more peaceful, and specific about what I say).
There are very good things to learn to say to deepen someone's hypnosis, ways to rolemodel in birth how to interact with a Hypnobabies family for staff, visitors etc.
Since so many still see hypnosis as "out of it", it takes understanding and skill to recognize how to enhance the hypnosis experience for the family. In Hypnobabies, Moms are up and about, sometimes eating and drinking or chatting and can appear to NOT be in hypnosis easily. But they are. A HypnoDoulas responses verbally and sometimes physically are already designed to deepen the hypnosis.
The book is very good for that, the cd's are great (come with the book).
Most Doulas do not know the family using Hypnobabies has chosen a college level course in hypnosis. They may be naturally good at the skills or have excellent study habits and some it is not so important to. I have not met a single family who did not derive some-alot of benefit in their minds and my observation-hands down. I love serving families at birth, but cherry on top used to be home birth, now it is Hypnobabies (hypnosis) births.
Very peaceful, usually the level of prep is VERY high on the parents part. I love seeing that when I use proper hypnosis HypnoDoula skills I make such a difference that I used to make physically!
No way is it ok to "rent" out materials. seriously! Not to fams or Doulas. Renting out almost makes this an attempt, not a positive approach to birth based on my experience and not very supportive. The materials are upgraded, I just got some new stuff in the fall!Again, since it is more like a college course in hypnosis, purchasing Hypnobabies comes with support, knowledgeable and caring!
They are NOT expensive-there is class or homestudy, the doula materials are worth their weight in gold, when completed, you can become certified and have hypnosis families (all types of hypnosis families) referred to you if you wish. I went from 1 hypnosis family in 2005 to 3 in 2007 to 12 in 2009. I am even serving repeat Hypnobabies families now also repeating their use of hypnosis. I know I get better each one, just like non hypno births, we learn, improve, grow. after 14 years of being a Doula, I am just so happy the chance to grow and serve is still going on.

Thanks! I have a few questions.
If I do the Hynpo-doula study via Hypnobabies can I help any mom who is doing hynobirthing regardless of the method she is using(Hypnobirthing:Mongan method, Hypnobabies, Joy in Birthing, etc)?
As Hypno-doula of Hypnobabies is there a certain course set you recommend to clients? If you recommend a course set to a client and they purchase it, can they get a discount on the product because their doula is a hypno doula?
If I should become a Hypno-doula and later want to teach classes to birthing families; what is needed to become an educator?
The home study course I've seen is about $140, is there another course set that is more affordable that I could recommend to clients?
I'm very interested in becoming a Hypno-doula!!!
Thanks!!!

On the different methods ~ they each have their own "language." The Hypno-Doula program teaches enough about hypnosis that as long as you adjust the language you use (based on what the woman has been practicing) you should be/do fine.
The page about becoming an instructor is at
http://hypnobabies.com/mylink.php?id=3816
Basically you need 1- a 50 hour course in hypnosis. They offer one for $190 although I think the free one that I linked to earlier in this thread would qualify as well (I have not confirmed this) 2- a history in pregnancy/childbirth ~ which you have as a doula (or in midwifery/nursing/or childbirth ed)
There is a telephone interview, then the class is 4 days and cost $645 per person. They have a note on their page that they don't have any classes planed for 2010 but will be starting again in 2011.
I haven't looked into other study kits or discounts ~ I live in an area where there are 2 HypnoBabies instructors and they are happy to have cards brochures from local doulas available for students. I know that one of them already offers a discount to students if they are using a midwife. I've always recommended taking the classes to any mom that showed an interest (I know that's not always possible though) the extra hands on practice & the effect of having someone asking how practice is going each week really keep people on track.
