I use a code word that yes the mom wants an epi..she can't say the code word during a ctx she can ask for drugs all she wants and won't get them until during rest..she says "Tera purple monkey" then the nurses can get the ansti. to do an epi...
get it?

Wink Jessica....

A code word is sometimes used by a mom and doula as evidence that the mom REALLY does want the pain med of her choice. Instead of mom saying, "I want drugs" or "I want an epidural" in the heat of a contraction (as most moms will have a time of doubt and say that), she'll sometimes hold out on saying the special 'code word' until she is 100% certain. Usually, the agreement is that if she says the code word, then the doula will make sure that someone comes in pronto to administer pain meds to mom.

I've always assumed that it is a word that the mom decides on, and that the doula and mom agree upon.

I always let the mom pick the code word so that she won't forget it. If she picks it then it is usually something that has meaning for her for whatever reason.

Okay. I talk to mom about it a 1 visit she is good to go at anytime and she emailed me a minute ago and said she didn't know a good word. For me to just tell her what the word will be. So...??? I was thinking "I want blue hair" or something weird. I wanted to think of something that sounded normal to say during labor, but weird works too. So thanks ladies.
