Question Scheduled Cesarean... Ideas/Studies/Literature?

I hate to ask for more help again, but is there someone who knows where I can get some literature on Doulas helping a mom during a scheduled C-section?

My childhood best friend will be having a section in late May, early June, and I have offered to be there for her for support. I would like to show her some literature that tells how a doula can even benefit them during a c/s. I told her from my end what I would do, being there emotionally for her, but I think it would help if she saw some literature.

This poor thing has had such an awful health life the past 10 years. Just a year ago, she had major surgery to remove her whole large intestine, due to intestinal problems. Major recovery!!!! Now, she's 19 weeks preggo, is having diarrhea 20-25 times a day, has lost weight, and was just diagnosed with having Chrone's Disease. Thankfully, the baby is doing great, is growing and gaining weight!

Any way you can lead me to some information, I would really appreciate it!!! Thanks so much doula sisters!!

I bought "the essential C-section guide"...I have not yet read it though but it is easy to find through B&N. I would also say it is best to call it a Cesarean Birth, sometimes wording can help to change perspective in general. She is still giving birth, and will still need a great amount of support. I would check out amazon.com, maybe the ICAN website.

Sorry I am not of more help.

What is B&N? Is it Barnes & Noble? If not...I'm gonna feel silly!

Kelley....I'm sorry, but I don't have anything specific that is coming to mind right now. I'll keep my eye out for something; if I see something good, I'll post it! Btw...Have you checked out Resources here on alldoulas yet? Maybe there will be something in the "Cesarean Section" category that could possibly be of some help. Just a thought....

Good point, Cortney! My doula trainer taught us this at our training. Since then, I've gotten myself into the habit of saying "birth" instead of "section".

Yes, I believe she is talking about Barnes & Noble. You're too funny! Don't feel silly!

Yes, I checked out resources, but maybe didn't search enough in detail...I'll try again. Thanks!!

hehehe! Yeah, B&N = Barnes and Noble. My partner works there so I am used to the acronym. And Kelley, I will keep you in mind and let you know if I come across anything.

Well....although there is some really good info on there, it's entirely possible that you didn't find exactly what you're looking for, for this particular need. I wasn't sure if you would or not , but thought I'd mention it *just in case*. What I have submitted there are just a few links to help Tiffany get it started. Tiffany & I are hoping that other members will start submitting links that they like, too! *hint, hint...everybody!!!*

I don't think there is any research papers on the specifics of how doulas effect the mom during a cesarean birth..however the cesareans I have been in I usually massage mom's neck/head as it usually helps with the shakes...I talk with her about everything that is being done (because usually nobody is talking to her and she can't see anything), when baby is out dad usually goes over with the nurses so I stay with mom..keep talking to her about baby show her pic if a digital camera was near by. And recovery is soooo important to have a doula as well as initial breastfeeding support which is usually a little difficult after surgery.
