My client with the breech presentation called me on Saturday afternoon to tell me her water had broken. I drove with the family to the hospital (2 hours away.) She spent the better part of 27 hours waiting for contractions to begin. Mom had a real, true phobia of hospitals and contractions vanished shortly after we arrived in triage. We tried everything to get them going but they always petered out again... Finally the doctor came, Pit was started, and 5 hours later a BEAUTIFUL Christmas baby arrived! It was my first breech birth and was totally amazing. Mom overcame her fears and amazed everyone, even herself. I couldn't ask for a better Christmas gift! It was exhausting driving back home this morning and it took 3 hours in the pouring rain after 2 days with no sleep. I made it home just in time for my kids to wake up and open presents...

So, she was able to have a vaginal breech birth? That is so wonderful!!!!!!
Yep! Totally unmedicated vaginal birth. She did have Pitocin and an episiotomy unfortunately, but everything else went exactly according to "plan." Her doctor is awesome and could not have been more supportive!

Wow.. that is great that she had the gift of escaping the scalpel..and of course, that she had you there to support her as her doula. I have a hospital phobia too.. it can serious hamper labor vibes. Do you do any sort of prenatel education with your clients about this? I have seen it with more than a few of my clients so I sort of wonder what the best approach could be here and I am looking for suggestions.
OMG, a vaginal breech birth - that is awesome! I really didn't think there was a provider left out there willing to deliver a breech baby vaginally. I'm so happy this mama had a nice birth. What a great Christmas present, and what a wonderful way to spend your holiday!

With this particular client she had discussed it with me in advance. She said it was severe and she was seeing a hypno-therapist to work through some of it before the birth. I didn't know the full extent until we were in the hospital. I think the skills we have as doulas REALLY transfer well into a situation where someone is anxious or has a phobia. She totally got through the hardest parts and was very calm when she needed to be.
