NPR 12/28 3:00pm
A friend just tipped me off to this... National Public Radio is airing a show this afternoon and they will be discussing doulas.
That is really all I know about it! Once it airs, I will look for it on archives and post a link in "birth news"... if it's worthy.

Any idea what show's title is? All Things Considered is usually on at 3pm here (Louisville, KY area), but I didn't see anything on their site about birth or doulas.
Thanks!

I'm not an NPR fan, but I might've tuned in just to hear the doula piece. Since I missed it, thanks for posting the link!

i just heard the end, someone called me to let me know it was on. a doc was talking about how he has a list of doulas he will work with and there are some doulas he wont because he says they are too aggressive. the gist was that the doula and doc and birthing mom and dad/partner should be a team and the doula can advocate the needs of the couple.

Yes, mostly about a doula's role in the birth team, mostly positive, although there was one OB who because of one experience was no longer working alongside any doulas at all, but she was not presented as the norm or anything, and the parents' commentary was all positive.
They touched on the opinion that certification should be mandatory, but didn't go too deeply into that.
I was inspired by some of the comments made by the docs who have had good experiences working alongside doulas, but I was disappointed that homebirth was never mentioned.
They acknowledged that, like doctors, all doulas come to the birth with their own ideas and opinions, so no 2 are the same, and made the connection between constant support and oxytocin release...
All in all it was positive.
