Question 3 Rs Video/DVD: Should I show clients?

Hey everyone....

I have just purchased Penny Simkin's 3 Rs DVD (properly titled, Relaxation, Rhythm, Ritual: The 3 Rs of Childbirth). For those that also have it...or even have seen it: Would/Do you show it to your clients?

My hope is to show clients in one of my prenatals if appropriate. I think it's incredibly educational...unique viewing, enlightening...etc., and would like to show it; BUT, I'm also a little worried that it could scare Moms who are going for a natural birth for the first time after having epidural births. Although it doesn't bother me in the least, I'm wondering if it commonly scares those less educated in natural birth in your experience? I surely don't want to scare them OUT of going for that natural birth before they even try! What do YOU think? Any opinions out there?

I love this video and show it in all my CBE classes *m

I teach classes focused on unmedicated childbirth, and that is where most of my doula clients come from. So I guess I am a CBE first, doula second.

On the day that we practice coping techniques, is the day that we watch the three R's. First we talk about the different ways of coping with unmed birth.

Then we watch the video. I frequently pause the video and ask them- which techniques we described is this woman using right now? or point out other interesting things that reinforce what I told them.

Then I have a handout regarding positions that I get out, and we do labor rehearsal, using a different position and "other techniques" like we saw in the video, while holding an ice cube. This is really empowering for the moms, they usually see how much less bothersome the ice cube is in certain positions and with other sensory input, and also what doesn't work for them at all. It is great for them to see that what really helps them might leave another woman cold (literally due to the ice cube LOL) and vice versa, and put that in context with the video. I explain that all these women are coping well, but in different ways because different things help different women, and different things help the same woman at different points.

I have had a very good response to the video. HOWEVER, one caveat- I am teaching people who are interested in at least trying unmedicated birth, not people who are sold on an epidural before they ever walk in the door of my class. YMMV.

I show this video to ALL of my doula clients. I want them to be prepared, especially the dads. I want the dads to know that this is what a normal laboring mom looks like and when/if it happens with his wife he won't be freaked out. So far I've not had any problems with it and everyone has liked it.

Talking Thank you for your opinions!!!

Ladies....

I am sooooo grateful for your positive opinions about showing this to clients. I REALLY wanted to show it, but was going back-and-forth on if I should or not.

I have my 2nd prenatal with a client (G2 P1) next week who really wants an unmedicated birth after feeling very separated from her epidural birth experience last time. Based on your posts, I now look forward to showing this to her and her husband! (Btw...I find it incredibly rewarding to attend to moms who are going for that longed-for natural birth after only having experienced epidurals in the past!)

I really like your way of incorporating the ice cube demonstration AFTER going over comfort measures and watching this film. I normally do the ice cube thing anyway, and so I was happy to see you post on how you incorporate these activities!

You both have been MOST helpful to me.... I just needed some affirmation that it would be ok! If anyone else out there has opinions they'd like to share on this (being 'thumbs up' or 'thumbs down'), your views are welcome!!!

I used to show this video to my private clients, but am not taking privates now, so have no one to show it too <boohoo>. I like the video alot!!! It gives a realistic view of what to expect during labor and delivery and also shows a realistic view of what doulas do, which I like. Sometimes parents hire us because it is trendy and don't really know what we can and will do for them.

I purchased mine from Polly Perez at Cutting Edge Press. I've bought a lot of things from her & her dh and am always so pleased with their quick service. I also bought Polly's Injoy video "Special Women" from her site, and highly recommend that one too (at $60 with the "Injoy" name, however, it is a bit pricey--also a good one to show clients, though!).

I find it intense to show all the way through. I show snippets depending on what I'm teaching. Just my 2 ¢

Wish I could help,BUT I haven't seen the video yet. yeah I know how could I not being a doula, but my money is spent every month on something to with doula-ing. It's on the "to get list" .It just has to wait it's turn.

I never buy anything if I can't pay out of pocket,so it's a slow process.

It is very intense. It doesn't show the MANY breaks Mom gets during labor, like it's a hard ctx, a 3 minute break, a hard ctx, a break, etc. Not a real selling video for normal birth and I do use it, albeit in bits and pieces with many disclaimers.

I agree with Anne. I just watched this video for the first time last weekend and I found it a bit intense. Yes, it is realistic etc but there they don't show any down time between contractions. I think stopping and starting and talking about each thing would really help add the break between contractions where there is none. I didn't walk away from that video (having watched it straight through) thinking "wow, I can do that!" KWIM?
