5. Best experiences.........
***Been a lot of those! Um, I guess the one that takes the cake was the 43 yo Mama who gave birth to her twins PAST her EDD, in a hospital, without medication or intervention. SHe firmly declined the epidural and the policy of giving birth in the OR. We were the only ones in the room when her first baby began to crown! He was born weighing 7lbs 9oz. Shortly followed by his footling breech brother weighing 8lbs 4oz!!!-All without a single tear.
6. Worst experiences....
***Single mom who use invitro to conceive, awesome labor, unmedicated had been pushing for 5 hours when the midwife called the doctor in, without any warning he cut an episiotomy-she was not numb (baby was no where near crowning) he said "What no epidural?" after she screamed...He applied a vacuum at least 7x all the while she's screaming "Please stop, just wait, just wait a minute. HOld on..." he ignored her, a nurse held her down-it was like witnessing a rape. I wanted to vomit. Her friend and I were calling out to the doctor to just pause but he ignored us. WHen baby was born she was in too much shock to even want to hold her...
7.Best tricks....
***That hoku point between the webbing of the thumb and index finger has been a Godsend for A LOT of clients! Also, the scent of peppermint really helps ease nausea, and near the end of labor, I find it really handy to fill throw 3 washcloths in a gallon-size freezer ziplock bag. I fill it about a quarter of the way with ice(from the ice machine) and add the tiniest bit of water-this way I have a fresh supply of ice cold washcloths for transition/pushing. Oh and during any lulls-when sleep is not possible, I usually ask the couple(in a traditional situation) how they met...which usually evolves to talk about their wedding, honeymoon, friends,-just general good memories and lots of laughter. Really sets a positive mood and makes them very affectionate towards each other, also eases the partner's nerves.
