Childbirth Acronyms

I suggested a list of all acronyms related to the birth field (or whatever is behind your name no one else has mentioned). Tiffany suggested starting a thread and once we have a good list going she will "sticky" it (as if I know what that means!). I will start a brief list of whatever I can think of just to get the ball rolling. Feel free to correct me if I make a mistake.

CAPPA-Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association
CLD-Certified Labor Doula
CPD-Certified Postpartum Doula
CLE-Certified Lactation Educator
???-Certified Antepartum Doula
CCCE-CAPPA Certified Childbirth Educator

DONA-Doulas of North America
CD(DONA)-Certified Labor Doula
???-Certified Postpartum Doula

LI-Lamaze International
LCCE-Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator

PfB-Passion for Birth (Lamaze)

LLL-La Leche League

BFW-Birthing From Within
HB-Happiest Baby on the Block

RN-Registered Nurse
IBCLC-Internation Board Certified Lactation Consultant

Ok, I am hurting my head trying think of others now. I will leave it to those of you holding all of the initials! lol

Actually I'll just sticky it now so everyone can contribute... and when we're done I'll just clean up the post so it's all in one post for easy reading. Again thanks for the suggestion Christy, it's great! (sticky just means I'll make it stick to the top of the forum so its always visible)

Thumbs up

Christy.... I think that technically, CD (DONA) stands for "Certified Doula (Doulas Of North America)"...and, DONA calls their doulas "Birth Doulas, not Labor Doulas". Thanks for the idea, Christy, it's a great one!

PP, Pp= Postpartum (after birth)
AP, Ap= Antepartum (during pregnancy)
IP= Intrapartum (during labor/birth)

MW= Midwife
CPM= Certified Practicing Midwife
LM= Licensed Midwife
CNM= Certified Nurse-Midwife
OB, Ob= Obstetrician
LC= Lactation Consultant
LE= Lactation Educator
CBE= Childbirth Educator

ctx= contraction
u/s= ultrasound
FHT= Fetal Heart Tones
FHR= Fetal Heart Rate
EDD= Estimated Due Date
EDC= Estimated Date of Confinement (never liked that one...sounds like prison, but then again...the hospital is just that to many!)

CBI= ChildBirth International

There's got to be TONS more, but that's all I can come up with for now. Anyone else care to give it a shot?

AROM-artificial rupture of membranes
WHO-World Health Organization
CDC-Centers for Disease Control
ACNM-American College of Nurse Midwives
ACOG-American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists
ECV-external cephalic versions
CIMS-Coalition for Improving Maternity Services
MEAC-Midwifery Education Accredidation Council
PGE1-misoprostol(cytotec)
PGE2-prostoglandin(prepidil)
NACC-National Association of Childbearing Centers

NPO-non per os, nothing by mouth

Some of these are less common but I just went through the index of The Thinking Womans Guide and added the ones I didn't remember seeing.

I didn't expect so many categories of acronyms...this is just great!!! When the list is complete I may just add a page to my website!
