Take an Extra-Ordinary Childbirth Class...
Birthing From Within
Birthing From Within is a holistic approach that gives parents the tools to birth naturally, and to birth-in-awareness if the journey takes unexpected turns. Class by class, parents practice and master a variety of proven pain-coping exercises to build their pain-coping confidence. They also explore and discuss times when the use of interventions or medications may be wise, compassionate, and "the next best thing."
In addition to the traditional focus on the mother's and baby's perspective, BFW includes a special class just for dads/labor support partners. And Birthing From Within is the only method that includes classes during the vital postpartum transition period. Even better, these after-baby classes are for moms, dads and babies-- together.

BIRTHING FROM WITHIN FAQ
What is the philosophy behind Birthing From Within?
* We believe that women need more than "book knowledge" to prepare for giving birth. A balanced and holistic class should offer both right- and left-brain information and engagement, and we strive for this balance.
* We believe that parents and birth attendants can influence, but not control, how a birth unfolds. In birth, as in life, there are no guarantees and even those who do everything "right" may still receive an unwished-for surprise from the Birth Fairy!
* We believe that birth is not a medical event, even when medical care is part of the process. Birth is a sacred and powerful rite of passage, with physical, emotional and spiritual components. We prepare women and partners for birth from this perspective.
What is a "rite of passage"?
It's a challenge-- usually physical, mental and spiritual in nature-- that offers opportunities for growth.
As an example, many people in our culture seem to be almost magnetically drawn to marathon races, wilderness survival adventures, obstacle and ropes courses, whitewater rafting, rock-climbing and so on. In each of these situations, an important part of the experience is to face your fears, to test your abilities, and to push beyond your perceived limitations. Other times, these same activities require people to let go of a particular goal, and courageously accept that their personal best in a tough situation is enough. Either way, they learn deep lessons about themselves, about life, and about others making the journey along with them.
Giving birth is an equally powerful challenge, with similar opportunities for growth. This is true regardless of whether your birth takes place at home or in a hospital, with or without pain, with an epidural or without pain medication, vaginally or by cesarean. It truly is a rite of passage for mother, baby, father or birth partner, and the family.
How do you "birth from within"?
To "birth from within" means to tune in and be aware of the happenings of the moment, and to recognize the spiritual element of the process of labor and birth as being powerfully important-- at least as important as the mechanical processes that are also involved. It may also mean being able to be present without judging what is happening, both within you and externally.
Birthing from within means finding what works for you, instead of relying on any one technique or method. Although it might be comforting to believe otherwise, the truth is that there is NO one-size-fits-all way to banish pain in labor.
Nor is there a single "right" way to cope with pain, or to handle unwished-for surprises, or to respond to a situation. Sometimes, we prefer to look externally for answers about how to do these things, and at times that may be exactly what is needed. Other times, it can be incredibly helpful to know how to look within and find your way based on your inner knowing. Birthing from within walks that balance.
Birthing from within also means finding a way to accept or embrace whatever "next best thing" might need to occur now. Because THIS birth-- the one you're living right now, whether it's a glorious and near-perfect ideal, or just a little different from that, or the complete opposite of everything that you wished for-- is the only one you will ever experience with this child.
What will I learn in classes?
Birthing From Within classes are unlike any other childbirth classes. Instead of using a lecture format, we're interactive. Parents learn lots of practical information through thought-provoking dialogues, interesting videos, and memorable, hands-on exercises.
Our focus is different too.
Obstetric terms, centimeters and percentages, stages of labor, and how to know if this is the real thing are important. So are good communication and information-gathering skills. Giving fathers or birth companions the skills they need to support the laboring mother is extremely valuable, too.
But in the throes of hard labor, a woman may find numbers and percentages irrelevant. And during his own journey through birth to fatherhood, even the most well-prepared and practiced partner may find that he has no idea what to do next. Sometimes stress or exhaustion completely erase from his mind those "comfort measures" explained in childbirth class.
So what DO you do, when you don't know what to do next? What do you do when you're overwhelmed and exhausted, but you can't stop to rest? Birthing From Within classes go deeper, to ask and answer these and other questions. Prepare for birth in a way that could change your life. Register for a Birthing From Within class now!
